Julie On FOX 25 News!
Tue, May. 24 2011
I got to sing on Fox 25 News!
On Friday the 13th (Not too unlucky for me!) I got up and got my kids off to school, made my husband's food for the day and put myself together just in time to rush over to the Billerica town green to catch the Fox 25 News Team in action for the last 45 minutes of their weekly Zip Trip!
I boldly approached a woman with a clipboard who looked like she knew what was going on and asked if I could sing on TV. (That was fun in itself!) She told me they were all booked up at this point but maybe they could have the camera swing by and see me singing on the way to another interview...
"Ok, I'll take what I can get, "I thought. And I gave out some CD's and set up where the lady suggested.
Next thing I know Cindy FitzGibbons is coming over saying I am in luck because someone canceled and I had time for a short interview and a piece of a song! So that is exactly what happened- of course not all things are perfect- Cindy said to just do the whole song so I started the "Coffee Song" at the beginning- then she cut me off just as I was going to SCAT... oh well... It was a huge blast! And you can see a tini piece of it on the zip trip recap on the Fox News Website!
Spring Student Recital 2011
Tue, May. 17 2011
Oh Yes! The Teacher was very proud!
We had our Spring Recital last week on Sunday May 15th at the lovely little Bennett Library in Billerica.
It was a joy!
Some of my favorite highlights included:
1. "Do Re Mi" done braodway style with Ella, Fiona, Rachel, Sarah, Kylie, Hannah and Caleb! I of course played Julie Andrews!
2. Lynne Santos singing "Back To December" by Taylor Swift
3. Don Gibbs always brings something special both with his originals and new versions of Prog rock tunes done with acoustic guitar- this time he sang "From the Beginning"- And "World Stand Still" Way cool!
4. My dear Caleb sang "Oh What a Beautiful Morning" and
played the drums (debut) on "Drive My Car" by the Beatles- the latter
needed a bit more practice - but he sure was cute!
5. And we can't forget all 7 songs with my little girls praise team!
6. Ella, Don and Jason ROCKED on "Hit Me With Your Best Shot"!
7. I got to debut two of my new songs again as well: "I'm a Mess" - a snappy little song of confession and gratefulness- wound in with characteristic Julie mischief, and the more serious "Waiting on You"- bound to be an arena rock ballad!
8. Did I mention that my little Hannah sang her now famous "These Boots are Made For Walkin" and stole the show- Again!?
9. The Show ended with all the adults and Ella singing one of my all time favorite songs: "You've Got a Friend" done in a cross between Carol King and old East Hill School Vocal Group style! It was beatiful and a great sing along with the audience!
There was much more fun as well- and lots of good food- and finally... Kylie Cadet gets the prize for bringing the most friends and family!!!!
Well done everyone!
Chocolate Tasting Gig Reviews
Sat, May. 14 2011
Since this website is about to be reconstructed, let me give you the short answer!
As always, I was very honored to be chosen to be the entertainment for the Billerica Cat Care Coalition's annual Chocolate tasting and Silent Auction Fundraiser! Ralph and I as our Jazz Duo: Moon Glow, had a wonderful evening playing jazz and eating chocolate!
I also added in a new twist with some fun cat songs- like a jazzy version of "The Cat Came Back" and "What Kind of Cat Are You"! I understand they raised record funds to help with the care and protect of stray and lost kitties in the Billerica area.

Women's Worship
Wed, Mar. 23 2011
I had the honor of helping to lead the worship for 1000 some women at the Nevins Center in Framingham on March 21st!
After all these successes in recent days, God chose this event to humble me. I was slated to lead two songs: "Here I am TO Worship" and "I Can Only Imagine." I only ended up leading one- and the road to that decision and what followed were very challenging for me and my pride.
First of all, I was in Georgia when I got the call to take part in the service the following weekend. Of course I said, "Yes"- I love to do these things- it is emotional and powerful to lead large numbers of women in praise. I would practice when I got back.
"Here I am to Worship" I knew very well- Had even led it at the Marriage Retreat the week before with the band... "I Can Only Imagine" I had never led- but I had performed it once, at Ralph's father's funeral. It is a beautiful song about heaven.
I got home Friday night and then Saturday turned out to be all about Hannah and her big Talent Show- finally at 10pm Saturday night (I had to be in Framingham at 8 am the next morning!) I sat down to rehearse. I realized the phrasing was tricky- so I went to the live Mercy Me You Tube and learned it from them.
The next morning I double checked my phasing in the car on my way and arrived to the event. Unfortunately, when we were in sound check, the way I was phrasing it was not how the others knew it and we were not together. We didn't have much time, so the woman who asked me to lead songs decided to lead it herself. I was embarrassed and heart broken, but I knew I needed to me humble and submit at that time.
It may not seem like much to you- but too much of my self worth is wrapped up in singing- and singing well- in being professional. When I feel I didn't make the grade- my standard- I can be crushed. I don't know where your security lies- but maybe you can relate.
It all reminds me that my security needs to be in God- not my talents. Shux- my song "Secure in Heart" is all about that! I should listen to my own lyrics!
Just to cap it off- I had a chance to talk and pray with the sister who took me off the song- and suggested that in the future she send out the version she wanted done in an mp3 or youtube link. But in the end- that wasn't what mattered... I might have felt like I failed because I didn't get to lead that one song- but really I did pass the test, a much harder one- dealing with a blow to my pride with humility. I can't say I always do. Praise God, I am growing!!!
Hannah Won!!!!!
Mon, Mar. 21 2011
Just a quick news flash- Hannah won the Townwide Talent Show for the whole first grade!!! She was competing with all the best acts from six different elementary schools! And she was funny and confident and just delightful! She even said a funny line in between some lyrics in the second verse and the audience laughed so much she got off form her back up track- but it didn't phase her- she trucked on like a pro and WON!!!!
Mama was so proud of her little 6 year old star!
Pine Ridge, GA
Sat, Mar. 19 2011
Today we returned for Georgia- what a lovely time we had. It was so good to escape the construction in my home and the lingering flu germs and the regular grind of life!
We were really there in Fitzgerald- about three hours from Atlanta, for a family reunion for Ralph's side of the family- but for musicians with a mission, every trip is an opportunity to play- even when you are still recovering from the flu!
In between chasing butterflies (literally! I even had one on my head at Calloway Gardens! See pictures on my Facebook!) and walking through the enchanted hills and forests with family and friends- we got to play some music for the community at Pine Ridge.
We played some worship music and "Always Kiss Good Night" (Which we had played for Ralph's sister Ingrid's wedding) and "Get in the water" was requested. The microphone didn't want to work consistently- and it was a lav- and I was tipping my head precariously in order to get to it- then Hannah jumped on my back! WHAT!? and I nearly fell over... This is life as a performer with six year old twins! Ralph couldn't hear me well... but somehow we pulled it off and people seemed to enjoy it. Yikes! Can anything ever be easy?
Then we wanted Hannah to do her talent show performance and she was terrified! She eventually did it- but nothing like she had done it at her elementary school- how will she do in the Town Wide Show tomorrow back in Billerica?
But thanks to the warm breezes and always the Lord- the trip[ was very enjoyable.
Love Story Marriage Retreat
Mon, Mar. 14 2011
Love was in the air and Ralph and I were to lead all the music for the annual church of Christ Primer's marriage retreat. Some 500 couples came together for a weekend of romance and biblical teaching on marriage... we planned the music and chose the band- set up rehearsals- THEN GOT THE FLU!
First Hannah had it all through her February vacation, then Caleb and I got it- and I lost my voice! Then Ralph got it. And this was no quick sickness- I was feverish and dizzy for a week nad even after that could barely talk much less sing. When Ralph got it the week before the retreat, we know we were in trouble!
He decided he couldn't play at all! I was crushed. How was I goignt o sing our song "Always Kiss Good Night" at a marriage retreat without him? I considered bailing out and staying home with him- but I felt I would leave the leaders in too much of a pickle at the last minute... so we made a plan that Ralph would come to the retreat and rest in the hotel while I led the music. Now something that should have been wonderful became very stressful.
I tried to find another keyboard player to replace him- but none was to be found- The band was gonna be me, bass and drums and 5 singers.
We rehearsed in our new rehearsal space (first time!) that Thursday night and things were a bit shaky. One of the songs we were doing was "You Are Good" by Israel Houghton and it demanded a funky lead guitar player and horn parts- we had neither.
Then on Friday the lead evangelist of the event got me on the phone and wanted to add some songs and have me learn the title song "Love Story" by Taylor swift for the next day! NOw on top of everything I was up late the night before learning another new song! I should have said no- but it fit the retreat so well that I relented- and besides- it's about Romeo and Juliet and I do have a soft spot for that story!
Well the day came and Ralph dragged himself into the car and we drove to Providence form Boston- getting there later than we'd planned and making sound check very rushed. I had most of my voice back but I knew I was not at my best. All I could do was pray.
God heard me! Everything on Saturday went fantastic- I remembered all the words to "Love Story" and Dwayne did a fantastic job on "Always Kiss Good Night" (which we sang to track with my guitar live since we didn't have Ralph live- at least he was there on the track!)
After the messages and playing for the day were over I got amazing take out at McCormick and Schmick and spent the evening with Ralph watching movies in the room. Would have liked to go to the dance- not to be.
Sunday was a miracle in itself. Part of the band arrived late, making me very nervous; yet we got the sound check done. Darlene Burgess also sang beautifully both with Dwayne on "Always and Forever" and on her solo on "Sanctuary"! Recently her health has taken a turn for the worse, please keep her in your prayers.
Other singers in the group were Bill Rocha and Ron McCormick with Kenny Hester on bass guitar and Tom Scotto on drums.
Somehow (God) I was able to sing out all weekend! The band rocked, the singers praised and the worship was wonderful. Many many people came up to thank us for the music. I give all the glory to Him. Now I need to rest my voice for a while!!!
All Asia Review
Tue, Feb. 22 2011
The Julie Kinscheck Band played at All Asia in Cambridge, MA- on the 20th of February! We had a blast. Our regular drummers Tom and Oscar weren't availabel so we had Brian Schwartzentruber fill in and he did a splendid job!
Also we were treated by the return of singer Ogechi Ibe who has moved to the Springfield Mass area and doesn't get to sing with us to often these days. She is always great to work with- she has some BIG Ears- and I don't mean dumbo- we are talking harmony!
Jessica Lewis sang soprano back up and was great as always; Johnny V. rocked the house on guitar, Kenny Hester on bass guitar and my beloved Ralph on keys.
We debuted "Love Life Like I Should" with the band- it went well, except that we'd never rehearsed it and I decided to throw Johnny and solo so we all weren't sure how it was coming back in! And silly me- I wanted to give props to Johnny after his solo in "Standin on a Rock" and in the midst of the applause lost my lyrics to the climax bridge!
Life in the fast lane- I'll bet the audience didn't know- but now you do- 'cause you came to the source!
LET THE SWEET SOUNDS OF JULIE KINSCHECK HEAL YOUR WINTER BLUES
February 1, 2011 | by Skope Staff
I am finally back from my vacation which was very refreshing in body
& spirit. So to get me back into the swing I wanted to have a
musician that could keep the good vibes going. My next guest is
enduring this snowy winter like most of us in New England and she goes
by the name Julie Kinscheck. Julie’s voice is soft, sweet, and inviting
to the ear. I knew I wanted to have her on after hearing her song
“Grace” off her album ‘Grace with Jazz on Top.’ Join us as Julie
Kinscheck talks about how the church led her to music, how music helps
her marriage, Hope Worldwide, and so much more.
Stoli: Where are we talking from today and how was your holidays?
Julie Kinscheck: Today I am in Billerica, MA -Home. We are expecting
a big storm tomorrow and we have been working on the recording studio
we are building in the house before the storm hits. We had some
construction guys in here this morning painting the control room floor
and fixing some spots on the n trim for the new door into what will be
the live recording room. It is amazing how many details go into not
only making something acoustically excellent- but just cosmetically
right!
As for the holidays- we spent Christmas here with visiting family.
We had finished all the big Christmas concerts etc the week before. We
had planned to go down to the Atlanta area to visit Ralph’s side of the
family- but we got snowed in! Time to sled!
Stoli: How much does music play into your family gatherings for the holidays?
Julie Kinscheck: Crazy as it seems- not much. My brothers are
professional base and drums, my parents (divorced and both re-married)
write (Mom) and Sing opera (Dad)- but when we get together we mostly
eat and talk. Some years I have led the family in carol singing. That
is just the actual Christmas Eve and Day.
My immediate family is always very involved in various Christmas
shows, student recitals and special Christmas services running up to
the holiday- on which I am usually singing, playing, conducting and
leading often adults and children. This year my favorite Christmas
event was the Christmas service I helped to direct the week before
Christmas- which included me directing two children’s choirs- And
singing this gorgeous BarlowGirl Christmas song called “Hallelujah
(Light Has Come)”.
Stoli: What are you proud of for 2010 and would like to accomplish in 2011?
Julie Kinscheck: One of the things I am most proud of in 2010 was
directing a benefit called “The Night Of HOPE” here in Billerica. I put
together a set with my original band to play- and we were the house
band. One of the songs off our The Force CD “Hope For the Children” was
the theme song for the night. I invited numerous other wonderful
musicians to perform and a speaker, Walter Kotkowski, from Hope
Worldwide to present. We raised a bunch of money for HOPE’s incredible
medical missions in Africa and Guatamala. I hope (no pun intended) to
direct an even larger event in town in 2011.
In 2010 I managed to get the attention of a good deal of local and
regional press; I was on the cover of The Metronome, The Billerica
Green, The Lowell Sun and The Minute Man to name a few. This should
make publicizing our next night of Hope much better. This in turn will
raise more money for needy children- which is an important part of my
personal mission as an artist.
Also in 2011 we hope to lay down the basics for my next CD. I have
been writing lots of new songs that I am very excited about- and with
our new home studio (prayerfully functional in the next few months) we
will start to put it together! I will fly my drummer brother, Gary in
from LA again and import my bass playing brother, Chris up from NY for
the basics!
Another really cool thing from 2010 was having my “Coffee Song” hit
the charts in Austria! I am praying to do a tour in Europe in the
summer of 2011.
Stoli: The church and your father helped get you started in music. How would you say that that shaped you as a songwriter today?
Julie Kinscheck: Well my Dad is certainly a big part of why I can
sing well- he has a gorgeous voice! But it was my mother’s poetry
writing style and her marvelous use of imagery that influences my
songwriting even today. The influence of the church and later
contemporary Christian music has been a more recent (last 20 years)
influence than childhood- but everything I write, even the completely
secular songs are all influenced by the faith that guides my life… my
belief in the good always triumphing over evil, that anything is
possible with God and that there is hope in any situation no matter how
grave it seems.
Stoli: You graduated from Berklee College of Music in
Boston. How did your years there help take your performance to the next
level and to learn with the best?
Julie Kinscheck: Berklee was invaluable to me! I always enjoyed
singing and writing and playing… but it was at Berklee that i got many
more tools to make a living doing it. Learning to arrange the parts
for the band, read and write vocal parts, write jingles, and so much
more has helped me again and again- as well as just the opportunity to
play with so many great musicians in every different style, get
experience in the studio etc. I’d recommend it to anyone serious about
pursuing music.
Stoli: You released your debut ‘Grace with Jazz on Top.’ How
long did you write & record that album and any plans for a follow
up?
Julie Kinscheck: Since that was my debut solo artist CD- some of the
songs, like “Always Kiss GoodNight” or “Coffee Song” were over a decade
old… I nearly put on a song “Where is the BOy” which I had written as a
student at Berklee in the 80′s! We did the basics but it wasn’t
finished for this disk- But the actual production of the CD took us
almost exactly a year. We laid basics in March and had the disc in hand
the following April. (And we pushed at the end because I had to have
copies for a conference I was singing at in Canada!) We had SO MANY
different wonderful singers and players on Grace that it took a long
time- and we had small children and other jobs on top! I expect the
next disk will take a similar amount of time to complete- so let’s look
for it in 2012:)
Stoli: Your vocal ability is captivating. When did you realize you had that talent and how do you keep your voice sharp?
Julie Kinscheck: Thank you so much. It is very important to me that
my voice reaches people. I like that word “Captivating”. I remember
watching Star Search when I was very young- maybe 7 and saying “I can
do what she’s doing!”- so I have known I had a talent for a very long
time- the challenge in knowing so young is that you can start to feel
entitled to recognition- I thought I was supposed to have hits before I
was 25 years old and it just didn’t happen that way! God has his own
timing. I keep having to relearn that lesson!
As for keeping my voice sharp- it helps very much that teach voice
lesson during the week. Being a vocal coach means I warm up my voice
and do exercises often- keeping my range and flexibility at its best.
Then when I practice my own songs- I’m already in good shape.
Stoli: Your husband Ralph is a musician as well. How does that mutual love for music keep your marriage strong?
Julie Kinscheck: We love to play together. It was part of how we
fell in love- I was in a country band and I asked him to play keys for
it. He thought “She must like me since she knows I’m really a rock
player.” and I thought “He must like me since he agreed to play in my
country band and I know that’s not really his gig!” The crazy thing is
he got to like country a lot more and I got a lot more rock in me from
the relationship!
Stoli: I am a coffee junkie. I love your song, “Coffee Song.” What inspired you to write & record that song?
Ralph was the inspiration! We hadn’t even started dating and you
could tell some sparks were flying! I wrote the song and gave it to him
on a cassette. It freaked him out a bit at first- but I think it sped
things up a tad!
Stoli: The USA is in rough shape these days. How can faith & music help ease the pain of the people suffering?
Julie Kinscheck: Well- I sure hope my music helps to do that!
Everyone needs hope in their lives- so many people feel so isolated and
depressed. God has the answers- he is really the place to look. “Secure
in Heart”, “Martha, Martha”, “Grace” and certainly “American Memory”
all lead you there. “get in the Water” is a really fun song about my
conversion- I was in a pretty low place before I cam e to faith- and
I’m sure there was more than a gospel choir singing of angels when I
cam e out of the water!!!! One of the toughest times in my life was
when I couldn’t get pregnant- but again, it was God, and my faith
community that helped me through this time.
Music, and my songs I pray, can inspire hope in people… It can make all the difference!
Stoli: You donate proceeds from sales to HOPE. How did you get involved with that cause and how can readers help out as well?
Julie Kinscheck: Hope Worldwide is an AMAZING charity! Ranked top
internationally for their efficient use of donated funds (they don’t
spent it all on advertising and sending free address stickers for
instance! it really goes to the needs) they help people all over the
world- what ever the needs in that area… in India it was housing and
medical care for lepers, in Africa it is Aids Clinics, in Boston it is
Foster programs and parties for foster teens and a food pantry etc…
Anyway- I got involved through my church over a decade ago.. originally
just doing door to door health education and neighborhood cleanup
efforts… Now I also do concerts for them and have promised that 10% of
CD profits will go to HOPE. Check them out at www.hopeWW.org
Stoli: What is coming up for you in the new year and where can we follow you online?
Julie Kinscheck: In addition to playing local shows and singing and
playing with the Praise team/band at church I am praying to travel to
tour in Europe, as I mentioned before… And other conferences and event
stateside. My material is especially suited to womens conferences and
events. If you out there know of womens events that might hire me-
PLEASE let me know:)
I'll be playing the All Asia Club on Sunday afternoon 5pm Feb 20! I'll be there with the band and some new songs! Don't miss it! See my Calendar for more details.
Christmas Music Galore!
Mon, Dec. 13 2010
Yesterday was a very Crazy day! I had the honor of singing some Christmas favorites at the Lowell Auditorium for some 2000 Christmas loving Christians at the Boston Church of Christ Christmas Service.
From there, My little Hannah and I raced to the Calvary Chapel in Chelmsford to perform at the BLT Music School's Christmas recital. I began teaching there last summer and now have a handful of students there on Friday afternoons. Hannah also take Piano there with Miss Cuisi. My students all did fine, Ritchie rocked on "Ode to Joy", Harry literally rocked on "We Will Rock You" by Queen and Kelly did a marvelous job with "Faith" by Lindsey Mac.
I sang three songs to close the program: 1. Mary Did You Know" (Which I love) 2. my original "Love Life Like I Should" and 3. my new version of "Oh, Holy Night"... all went well- people seemed to really enjoy "Love Life Like I should"- with the vocal trumpet solo.
But the star of the day was my six year old Hannah. She not only sang and played piano with that most adorable little girl voice- but she got the job to blow up these tiny beach balls that had BLT promo on them and give one to each performer when they finished. She loved her "Job" and bounced up on stage happily after each act! What a little dynamo she is! Everyone told me how cute she was- even though it was all Mama and Daddy could do to keep from shouting out and playing ball through the whole event!
Northern Regions Christmas Program December 19th
Mon, Dec. 13 2010
Ralph and I and the Northern Praise band have been rehearsing for a marvelous Christmas program entitled: "Hallelujah!"
This coming Sunday, December 19th at 10am at the Lawrence High School, 70-71 Parish Rd in Lawrence, MA.
I will be singing "Hallelujah" by Barlow Girl with Melanie Singh and Kristen Lamb, conducting two childrens' chorus' and sharing some beloved carols.
The program will include other enjoyable singers doing Christmas songs from Casting Crowns, Chris Tomlin and more traditional works.
This will be a lovely family time- please come join us!
Student Recitals
Thu, Nov. 18 2010
Lots of student recitals coming up:
This Sunday, Thanksgiving Showcase, November 21st, 4pm for my private students from my home studio- Bennett Library, 3 Concord Rd, Billerica
and Dec 12th, A Christmas Recital, 7pm at Calvary Chapel in Chelmsford for my private students from BLT.
I am so proud of all my students and they are doing some really cool stuff- from Yes to Ingrid Michaelson to Taylor Swift to Elvis to Beethoven! Even my little Hannah is debuting on piano and Caleb has written a worship song!
YOu really must come see all these wonderful performers!
AND- I will be debuting new songs noone has heard yet! Be there!
The latest Billerica Green came out this week with my new Column: SCAT CHAT!
The idea for the name came from Jim Cafarella (and I still owe him his prize!).. Because I love to SCAT sing- and some call the me the "Queen of SCAT"- I can dig that!
This month was really an introduction and an invitation to have people send me info on local Billerica music... a few brave bands already have.
I also did a review of the 15 year sensation Ria Eaton's new single. She was a sweetheart and will likely go far.
Stay tuned for more articles about the Billerica Music scene: what's up with the music in the schools, clubs, churches, local bands and open mics and more!
Enduring Song
Wed, Nov. 10 2010
I have figured out what I want to do when I grow up!
I want to write an enduring song that will last long after I am gone. It should be meaningful- not some one hit wonder pop hit- but something like the next "Amazing Grace" that could be sung in churches or around the campfire. A song to be covered by tons of other artists because it always touches the audience in every new rendition.
Oh how I long to write this song. I don't think I have yet.
And if along the way this song brings me to play at major awards shows (Grammies, Doves, CMA's?) I wouldn;t mind of course... but that wouldn't be the goal.
And if that song brought me royalites to support my family and my music habit and even be generous to church and charities- I certainly wouldn't complain.
But only God can put such devine inspiration on my heart, in my fingers.
Bring it on, Lord!
Night of Hope Review
Fri, Sep. 17 2010
Johnny and I had the honor of playing for another fundraiser for Hope Worldwide- this time in Hartford, CT.
This Night of Hope was ELECTRIC! The audience was so with us! They sang along and clapped and laughed where they should- and tears flowed in the right places, too!
John asked me afterwards, "Who let the lions out of their cages!" because we were playing off each others riffs and it was simply wild! (But Godly, too:) ) John threw some cool new surprises into a few songs- I looked over at him and just went "yeah!"
The other talent there was super as well! I really liked the new rock versions of some old favorite hymns by the Hartford praise team. And the worship was powerful with the Chicopee Praise team. There was this rapper there with a lady singer who were great- I should get their names and fix this report...
The most important thing, and the reason we went there in the first place was the charity. It was a fundraiser for Hope Worldwide's medical missions in Guatemala and Honduros. Over $2000 was raiser! Halleluyia!
What an honor to get to help with such good work and have such a great time!
American Memory
Sat, Sep. 11 2010
I remember going to the office between classes at the school in Jamaica Plain where I was then the music teacher. Someone said "They bombed the World Trade Center!" I was worried since I had a friend who worked in the World Trade Center in Boston.
I soon discovered they meant NYC- and the gruesome tail of the fall of the twin towers began to unfold.
The song "American Memory" is a tribute to those who lost loved ones on 911- but it is more- it is a reminder of the good in all of us- a reminder to cherish the precious days at hand... a salute to all those who have, do and will serve our marvelous country.
God Bless America!
American Memory Words and music by Julie Kinscheck c. 2001 In honor of those who lost loved ones September 11th, 2001
VERSE: Where were you on the fateful day in 1999? Where were you when you heard the news – that children died at Columbine? Were you finishing the dishes or sittin’ at your desk? In the car on the way to the shopping mall Or puttin’ the baby to bed?
PRECHORUS 1: Did you think that America would never be the same after that day? Were you outraged, were you shocked? Or did you just feel the pain?
CHORUS: None of us is promised tomorrow So we’ve got to make the best of today Love like we may not ever get another chance Fill our lives with laughter- don’t forget to dance None of us is promised tomorrow Say sorry very quickly and give to those in need ‘cause we can’t take it with us When we go to meet our God In the face of tragedy- we build unity- AN AMERICAN MEMORY
VERSE 2: Where were you on the fateful day in 2001 When terror stuck New York and attacked the Pentagon Were you teaching precious children or on the internet Were you watching on the TV scenes you wish you could forget?
PRECHORUS 1: Did you think that America would never be the same after that day? Were you outraged, were you shocked? Or did you just feel the pain?
CHORUS: None of us is promised tomorrow…
BRIDGE: Let’s make a memory right now! Americans hand in hand in prayer with faces bowed- Comforting all those who mourn- together we stand proud! In tragedy we build unity- In tragedy we build unity- In tragedy we build unity- AN AMERICAN MEMORY!
God Loves to do the unexpected
Wed, Aug. 11 2010
I was just thinking that God loves to do the unexpected, impossible- take the little guy and beat a vast army- stuff like that.
Well, I was the kid expected to make it in music. Music was all around me, I was talented and motivated.
But I have eeked by, by the hair on my chinny chin chin with little splashes of success to keep me going. But where is the glory in my self made success? But a middle aged Mom who'd just about given up, who totally surrenders to God because at this point success would be against all odds- there is a chance for God to catch some glory.
Everyone would look at my success and say- WOW! THAT is all GOD!
"Now Jabez was more honorable than his brothers because he prayed: Lord, Bless me indeed, enlarge my territory and let your hane be with me. Keep me from evil that I might not cause pain." - 1 Chronicals 4:9-10
Summer Recital This Sunday
Thu, Jul. 29 2010
Hi All!
Just got over the horrible yucky yucky summer bug!
Ready for action again!

Born-again Billerica Christian wants her music to inspire

BILLERICA
-- She's a folkie who became a jazzer and along the way got caught up
in country, contemporary Christian, gospel and rock.
Sure, it sounds like a lot. But all that and more is packed into Julie Kinscheck's debut solo album, Grace With Jazz On Top.
Kinscheck, who lives in Billerica, is a married mother of young
twins, Hannah and Caleb. She also teaches voice and guitar lessons out
of her home. But it's through the 10 songs on her new album that her
musical talent shines brightest.
When Kinscheck talks about songwriting, she doesn't just focus
on coming up with a compelling beat and a pleasant melody. Her mission
is to write music that will inspire.
"I've always wanted to do something worthwhile with my music,
as opposed to being a singer that someone listens to and then forgets
because the music didn't impact their life," Kinscheck said. "Music can
be a great influence for people emotionally and spiritually."
Kinscheck started writing songs when she was a 9-year-old girl
growing up in Ithaca, N.Y. Music runs in the family. Her dad sang in
local operas. Her two older brothers, Gary and Chris, play drums and
bass.
As a teenager, Kinscheck honed her performing as an exchange
student for a year in Munich. During that time, she traveled around
Europe performing on street corners, in subway stations and public
squares.
It was the early 1980s, when street musicians didn't have the luxury of battery-powered amplifiers to get their sound
out. Kinscheck had to compete with the grind of trains, loud tourists
and beggars to be heard. It was a valuable lesson in performance and
culture.
"In Germany, whatever happened was part of the show. If a weird
guy tried to give me a kiss, everybody just watched. Nobody tried to
defend me," said Kinscheck, smiling. "In Italy, the crowd would
surround me. They wouldn't even let police through."
Kinscheck said she almost landed a record deal while in
Europe, but it fell through at the last minute. She returned to the
States and enrolled in Oberlin College in Ohio, where she studied music
theory and took voice lessons for the first time.
A free spirit who wanted to make a difference with her music,
Kinscheck got the school to approve a special major for her -- "Vocal
Music and Social Change in the 20th Century." But a summer studying at
Berklee College of Music, where she spent nights jamming in practice
rooms with other musicians, made her realize Boston was her calling.
Kinscheck transferred to Berklee, graduating with a bachelor's
degree. That's also where she met her future husband, Ralph Kinscheck.
The two didn't hit it off at first, though.
"He ran with druggy rockers. I was with the stuck-up jazzers,"
said Kinscheck. "He thought I was pretty conceited. I thought he was
pretty burned out. We had nothing to do with one another."
In fact, they wouldn't meet again for eight years. By that
time, Kinscheck became a born-again Christian with the encouragement of
her guitarist Jim Peterson. One day, somebody invited Ralph to a church
open-mic night.
Soon after, Kinscheck wrote a tune about her budding love for
Ralph, "Coffee Song," which appears on her record. The tune is
chock-full of double entendres comparing the experience of sipping java
to falling in love.
Ralph, who works at Berklee and owns a recording studio, is now Kinscheck's producer, engineer and piano player.
Between being a mother and wife, Kinscheck is trying hard to
promote her music. She recently had a CD release party at the Bull Run
Restaurant in Shirley. She'll be performing at All Asia in Cambridge at
4 p.m. on Sunday.
Kinscheck acknowledges that being a do-it-yourself musician
isn't easy, but she is hoping the quality of her music will open doors
for her. She made sure to spend the time and money to have her album
mixed and mastered professionally so it would stand up to any
professional recording on the radio.
"If you spend a whole lot of years trying to get discovered
and thinking you're the best thing since sliced bread, and it doesn't
happen for you, eventually you have to stop and take some serious
assessments and get real about life," said Kinscheck. "But I'm a
dreamer. I can't help it"
It's really cool when people come to me to do an interview instead of me chasing them down- and that happened twice in the last couple of weeks!
First I got asked by Max Bowen, the editor of the Billerica Minute Man Paper to first do an interview on WCAP "Spotlight on Billerica" in Lowell- then do a gig at All Asia- then do another interview for his online station out of Quincy: Citywide Blackout.
The first show (WCAP) was live- went great- I hope some people heard it:)
Then in the middle I got a call from this guy Chris from the Lowell Sun paper- he zipped over to do a spotlight interview for the paper a week ago- but the story got bumped till next week some time... still awesome that he heard about me and tracked me down! Keep your eyes peeled!
Finally, today I did the interview with Max for City Wide Blackout- that will air this Thursday July 15th at 10pm on www.cyberstationUSA.com. That was a gas- he's such a fun interviewer. I also got to play "Coffee Song" live on the air and he played "Get in the Water" and "Precious" from the CD as well. I had a great time and hope I made sense- interested to hear it back!
While I was there I met a very interesting and helpful person- the other guest on the how was Charlie Alajandro- also lknown as "The Ordinary Woman"- she not only has her own internet radio show and promotion company (made my brain stretch with all the good ideas she was giving me!) But She is an X-cop gone actress and author! Wow! Cool lady. We will be in touch.
I hope you will stay in touch with me! Let me know you read this blog- drop me an email at julieksings@comcast.net
God Bless!
Review of CD Release at Bull Run
Sun, Jun. 20 2010
We had the big CD Release Party and Concert on June 13th at the Bull Run Restaurant in Shirley- and it was SUCH A BLAST!
If you didn't make it, stay tuned for new videos up on Youtube.com/julieksings soon.
What a GREAT BAND! And FANTASTIC back up singers! There were 18 people total in the show from the gorgeous Bass flute (Marenglen Skendo), Violin (Sally Martin) and cello (Priscilla Chew) trio on "Martha, Martha" to the kickin Trumpet (Rolf Holly) and Sax (Mark Sensinger) and 7 back up singers (Dwayne Burgess, Jessica Lewis, Melanie Singh, Gerry Yurko, Alan Roscoe, Jim Cafarella and Diana Wick in order left to right as the first picture above) on "Get in the Water".
The Rhythm section was on fire that night. Johnny Vicaire on lead guitar and Ralph Kinscheck on Keys played brilliant solos; Oscar Arocha on Drums and Kenny Hester kept the grooves tight and with finess (not easy in such a live room acoustically) and Jim Wick put the icing on the cake with his percussion licks.
And me, well, I was in heaven. Heaven must be like that- surrounded by great musicians, beautiful harmonies- and singing songs that move my heart when I sing them.
On top of it all, three children found sponsors through Compassion International! thanks so much for Christine Mactaylor and her friend for coming with child packets for the guests to look through.
Some other great moments in the night included the do wop sisters, Melanie, Diana and Jessica singing with me on "He Called"- right back to the 40's with a current twist. Thanks also to Mike Femino for the Horn charts for that song and "Get in the Water".
We always have lots of fun on the "Coffee Song"- I do enjoy imitating a trumpet solo:) And "Grace" with the added violin and percussion- AHHHHH. Dwayne Burgess also added his marvelous sultry tones to "Always Kiss Good Night"- quite the treat.
We can't forget John's ultimate funky solo on "Standin on the Rock"- oooh, Baby! And Ralph always blows the doors off on "Deep Impact"- a throw back from our The Force CD that we revived for the occasion! And you should have seen the choreography- COOL!
And, yes, I cried while telling the story before "Precious"- I do love my kids so much! The addition of Priscilla on Cello at the last week added just the right sweetness. I can't wait to see the video.
There were many challenges along the way leading up to this show: various players had to drop out at the last minute, people got sick, had car troubles, even family died (so sorry- not making light of that) for one player... Even the photographer didn't show up for the show! And I still don't know why!!!!! But God provided richly; my Mom and Jen Murphy were ready with cameras on the spot, Rolf Holly came out of Trumpet retirement, Sally led me to Priscilla and we were ready!
Special thanks to the good friends who joined us that night!
CD RELEASE PARTY/ CONCERT Sunday June 13th, 7 pm at the Bull Run, Shirley, MA!
Oh- I am so excited about this show! I get to have a full rhythm section plus percussion, stings, horns and singers! Oh, wow!
And another great desire will come true here! I will have a table at the show for Compassion International! People will be able to sponsor a needy child at my show! I am SO EXCITED about this! Ralph and I sponsor Shaina- a needy child int he Philippines, which means so much to me. I pray others are inspired to do the same.
Who sang "rocked the Casbar"?- or something- well we rocked the Stable coffeehouse on Saturday night May 15th.
Now in retrospect- our set was too long- I should have broken it up into two sets... But I was pleased with how things came out. I considered this a warm up show for the CD release- and so many things are really coming together nicely.
The show included: Oscar Arocha (drums), Kenny Hester (Bass), Ralph Kinscheck (keys), John Vicaire (Lead guitar), And singers: Alan Roscoe, Will & Rebekah Cox, Diana Wick, Jessica Lewis and Melanie Singh- And me on acoustic and lead vocal.
Big thanks to Harry Nelson who ran sound and Kurt Stahl our gracious host!
Chocolate and Kitties
Sun, May. 16 2010
Friday Night Ralph and I played one of our favorite annual gigs (for the 6th year!): The Billerica cat Care Coalition's Chocolate tasting benefit and silent auction.
Sharon Dubois does a fantastic job as president and founder of the coalition putting this event together. It is delicious first of all. A huge number of companies provide baskets, gift certificates and merchandise for the auction, we get to play jazz all night as my duo Moon Glow- AND the money all goes to help kitties! Gotta love it!
NY Adventure!
Sun, May. 9 2010
A couple weeks back I played in NYC! Way cool- as you might expect. As it turned out, I got to play at three places that weekend- (four if you count playing half a song before being shut down by the security guys in Grand Central Station cause I didn't have a permit- oops!)
I arrived on Sat afternoon with too much stuff to fit reasonably through a subway turnstile! By the time I made it to the Fashion Institute, where I was staying with my gracious host a former babysitter for my twins, Olivia, I was a sweaty mess with sore shoulders! But at least it wasn't raining yet:)
That evening we ate at a fabulous little Greek place, then went to Ground Zero. I really wanted to go there- especially since I wrote my song "American Memory" inspired by 911. Unfortunately there is a high fence around the whole area and you really can't see much- I heard later that is some place with a plaque- but we didn't go there- but I did get a picture beside the picture (Did you follow me there?) of what the new monument is supposed to look like:)
Sunday I had the honor to play at the service of the NYC Church of Christ- Manhattan region. Despite that it was pouring and I was having a bad hair day, the performance came together- God moved and hearts were moved, too.
From there I went to lunch with the senior family group from the church- Chinese- yum. And then headed to the famous Baby Cakes Gluten Free Bakery. YOu should have seen me trying to juggle all my stuff and a box of fancy cupcakes etc all the way back to CT that night! Nuts!
I spent the late afternoon at a delightful jazz club called Cleopatra's. They had an open mic for jazz singers on Sunday afternoon. There were so many wonderful seasoned singers there (and some pitchless newcomers)- I really enjoyed the whole scene. Unfortunatle they only got me up to sing at the very last second before I had to fly into a cab and dash for my next gig- but the trio was tops and I had a blast singing stands: "All of Me" and "Summertime"! Wish I could have stayed longer.
The final chapter on this trip was playing at the Acoustic Soul lounge at SIP on the upper West side. It turned out to be tiny hole in the wall coffee shop with a bar- only about 4 tables! And I didn't even fill them up- very anti-climactic end of the trip. My set went great- I guess, even though I had to turn sideways every time the waitress went to the kitchen or someone had to pee!
The cool thing was who the few in the audience were: Geoffry Carlson with his wife and daughter came from my mailing list- THANK YOU so much- they even brought me flowers and gave me a ride with all my stuff back to Grand Central afterwards! Also in the "Crowd" was a radio DJ from MusicalPathwaysRadio.com - he said he'd play two of my songs that week! Way cool again! Thanks Abayomi. I also met a couple other up and coming artists- I look forward to reviewing their CD's and I'll give you a review!
I took the 10pm train back to Milford CT and went back to my cousins to rejoin my twins to return home on Monday. Another adventure!
NYC This Sunday!

I'll be playing the BIG APPLE this weekend!
April 25th- Sunday Morning at the Manhattan region of the NYC Church of Christ and Sunday Night at the Acoustic Soul Lounge!
See my shows listings for times and directions!!!
Pioneer Valley Variety Show
Sat, Apr. 17 2010
Last Saturday was one of the most challenging gigs ever- not the gig itself... that was actually a blast! It was the getting there!
Sometimes I just take on too much (an understatement- and something that drives my dear Ralph crazy!)...
I wanted to play at this variety show in Chicopee, MA sponsored by the Pioneer Valley Church of Christ. But I had a parenting workshop all day... I had to organize babysitting for the day- then arrange for a babysitter to take my kids to meet me at the workshop in Milton, MA so I could go straight from there out to Chicopee- should have had plenty of time. But add in a 6 year old flipping out because he forgot his Ben 10 watch and another 6 year old who is hungry and wants to pee and has to eat gluten free...
We had a slow go of it anyway... But things got really bad when I missed my exit of the MASS pike and the next exit was 15 minutes down the road- then 15 minutes back- I got to the babysitting location (my guitar player Johnny's family) at 7pm- when I said I'd be at the gig- latest scenerio!
THen I took back roads that my GPS in my iPhone told me would be quicker than getting back onto the pike to get there- and the Devil was in that phone! I needed my glasses too and the light wasn't good, it was raining... and the little blue dot wasn't keeping up with my progrerss so I missed turns and had to recallibrate several times and finally thought I should have been at the location at around 8 pm.... but where was it!
JOhnny had left his cell phone at home- uncharged- and I ended up calling all over the place tring to get a phone number for someone t the show- no luck. The Sharma's number was old, Ogechi gave me the new one- but apparently Lisa was in the hospital- OK- my problems are small- but they sure seemed big-
at last someone gave John a phone and he called me to find out where I was... Ans it appeared that somehow I had calibrated my GPS to some other spot I must have touched on the screen and I was in the wrong town!!!
At last I got on track and got to my show close to 9pm!
At least I wasn't the only act- in fact- I hear there were lots of talented folks playing that night that I missed. I even got to jam with my old roommate/ Maid of honor dear friend Suzanne Clark- who I didn't know was there and could have called if I'd known!
We had fun adding the band to several songs fromt he audience- only drag was that by the time I went on at the end- many people had left and CD sales were low. Didn't pay for the gas!
Then I drove back to John's house to collect my sleeping twins- falling asleep at the wheel the whole way... Decided to sleep on the couch. And the saga continues...
The next day I decided to drive to Billerica to shower and get clean clothes before church- mistake. I must have still been followed by that demon- I ended up accidentally in the Fast lane- and to avoid a $50 ticket had to go to the office and sign up for Fast Lane- and was too late for church back home.
Thank God for Grace and friends and a loving husband to return to! Rock on!

JULIE KINSCHECK
From Metronome Magazine March 2010
Written by Brian M. Owens
With the making of her new CD, Grace With Jazz
On Top, many of Julie Kinscheck’s musical dreams were fulfilled. Along with her
brothers, Gary and Chris Gibbons, her husband Ralph Kinscheck, and a host of
fine local musicians, Julie made a lifetime’s worth of songwriting a reality.
We talked one wintry day and she defined how her faith and music walks hand in
hand with one another...
METRONOME:
Did you grow up in a musical family?
My
father used to sing operas. He went to college at Oberlin. Dad and mom sang in
Gilbert & Sullivan productions together in college. My mother thought she
didn’t have a good voice so she always played the comedic role, but she
actually had a really nice voice. That’s how my parents got together
METRONOME:
Where was that?
In
Oberlin, Ohio, which is near Cleveland. My dad has gone on to conduct choirs,
in fact, he still conducts a choir for his church.
My
oldest brother, Chris Gibbons, is a bass player and he played on my new CD
Grace With Jazz on Top. My other brother, Gary, is a drummer. He lives out in
L.A. He’s a professional drummer out there. He also played on my CD.
METRONOME:
Does Chris live around here?
No.
He lives in Ithaca, New York. That’s where I grew up.
METRONOME:
They both come here to record with you?
Yeah.
It was actually a childhood dream. When I was a kid, my brothers always played
in bands and they toured. They had a cover band that was really good called
Crossroads. They weren’t in to doing the Jackson 5 thing though... little
sister was little sister. As we grew up, we all moved different ways. We didn’t
get to play together. It was a desire for all of us to record together.
METRONOME:
You finally made it happen...
Yeah.
We’re talking about getting together again for the next project.
METRONOME:
Who were some of your musical influences growing up as a kid?
I
grew up in the seventies, so I got a lot of the folk rock- Joni Mitchell, James
Taylor, The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkle and Bonnie Raitt’s early stuff. I
listened to a lot of Joan Baez and Helen Reddy early on too, but I don’t really
count them in my current influences. I had a music teacher, John Baily in
elementary school who was a folk singing guitar player. He used to encourage
all of us to make up our own words to songs we knew. I wrote my own verse to
“Obladi Oblada” by The Beatles which I occasionally sing on gigs. It’s kind of
a kick. He also encouraged us to make up harmonies. We had a vocal group that
did a lot of 70s style three part harmonies. I think that acted as a big germ
for my songwriting and improvisation because I started doing it when I was in
elementary school. My mother also wrote poetry. She put out a couple of poetry
books when I was a child. Dad was the music and mom was the words.
METRONOME:
So you grew up in a very creative family?
I
did.
METRONOME:
It must have been a lot of fun too?
Of
course, I was influenced by my brothers’ bands and they did a lot of that funky
stuff... Earth, Wind & Fire, The Commodores, Chicago, The Doobie Brothers
and stuff like that.
METRONOME:
What made you pick up the guitar?
It’s funny
because I played a couple of other instruments before that. They tried to give me
piano lessons and violin lessons but I just wasn’t in to it. I really think it
was my elementary school folk singing guitar teacher. He would do sing-a-longs
with us all the time and I wanted to accompany my singing. I learned a few
chords first from my brother Gary, then John Baily started teaching me all the
chords to the songs we did in school. As soon as I started playing, I started
performing my own material. When I was nine, I started playing guitar and then
started singing in talent shows and churches at ten and eleven.
I
used to be in gymnastics and was very serious about it. I wanted to go to the
Olympics. I used to walk from school to gymnastics practice everyday after
school. I would walk and sing at the top of my lungs hoping that someone would
discover me.
METRONOME:
If you weren’t going to make it in the Olympics you wanted to be a famous
singer?
Yeah,
I figured I would do the Olympics first and then be a famous singer, but I
didn’t make it to the Olympics so I focused on music after that.
METRONOME:
What were your Olympic aspirations?
As
a gymnast. Olga Korbut was my hero and Nadia Comaneci. Six hours a day, six
days a week when I got to my height. I was in advanced competition but I
realized they had already chosen the Olympic team for the next Olympics when I
would be seventeen. If I made it for the next one I would have been twenty one
and that’s way too old. So I had a realization at fourteen that I wasn’t going
to make it. I had to move on.
METRONOME:
How did you end up landing in Boston?
After
high school, I went on the Rotary Exchange Program and went to Germany. I lived
in Munich for a year. I traveled around Europe playing guitar in the streets
and afforded my trip that way. It was pretty exciting. I was eighteen, doing
crazy things I hope my daughter never does. Then I went back to the states and
went to college at Oberlin. They didn’t have anything going on as far as
contemporary music. It was a classical school. I felt like I had a good
foundation in theory and history and classical voice, so I went to Berklee for
a summer program and I loved it. I ate it up. I was singing in the studios and
practice rooms all the time.
METRONOME: Did you go for vocal
performance?
For
the summer program, you don’t have to specify, but vocal was my main
instrument. Then I did some songwriting and arranging. Then I went back to
Oberlin for a semester and decided I was going to go back to Berklee eventually
and I did. I transferred and they gave me a full scholarship. That was
beautiful. I returned to Berklee to graduate there. I ended up with what they
call a Bachelors of Music in Professional Music. I probably would have been a
songwriting major if they offered it then.
METRONOME:
Was that a two year course?
I
got a four year degree because I got transfer credits from Oberlin, but I was
only here for two and a half years at Berklee.
METRONOME:
When you graduated from Berklee, what did you do?
When
I got out of Berklee I realized the money was in general business [GB]. At the
time I put together my own band called Centerpiece. It seems like it’s worked
that way a lot. The way that I’ve managed to do things is when I put it
together. Auditioning for other groups never got me anywhere. We did clubs and
weddings. It was a cover band. We did alot of eighties covers of Madonna, Janet
Jackson and Gloria Estafan and Whitney Houston, that kind of stuff. We threw in
a little Chaka Kahn from my brothers’ influences, but I wasn’t doing a lot of
folk stuff at that juncture and I wasn’t performing my originals a whole lot.
It was hard to do both at the same time. I had Centerpiece together for about
six years and then I became a Christian and started joining Christian rock
bands. There we did a lot more of my original material. I was in a band called
Rescue Squad which was a funky Christian rock/blues band for a couple of years.
METRONOME:
Were you going through some traumatic life experiences that made you want to
become a Christian?
That’s
a fun story. Yes. I mentioned my family was musical, but I also come from a
long line of ministers and preachers. However, what I saw in their lives didn’t
attract me to Christianity, so I went the other way. I didn’t want anything to
do with it. At Berklee, I had a friend who was an amazing guitar player named
Jim Peterson who is now a Professor at Berklee. Jim was a Christian and he
would keep inviting me to church. He was such a good player, I kept hiring him.
He kept inviting me and inviting me.
My
boyfriend at the time who played with me in Centerpiece broke up with me. I was
pretty bummed out. At the same time, I got nodes on my vocal cords. It was
interesting. My friends all just disappeared. If I didn’t have a gig for them,
they didn’t have time for me. Then there was Jim. Jim was a real friend. Then
my boyfriend decided he wanted to come back to me and I said, No. He started to
study the bible with Jim and he really changed. It blew my head. So I went to
Jim and said, What are you teaching him? I have to know what’s changing him? I
started to fall back in love with my boyfriend because he was so much nicer to
me. So Jim set me up with his girlfriend and I started to study the bible and
faced my own demons and realized that Christianity was not just what I had seen
growing up, it was something much deeper, and it applied to me. In 1991 I made
a decision to be baptized and become a Christian and joined an Arts Ministry
which was very exciting. Since then I’ve done a whole lot of music related to
church things which has taken me to different countries, many different states
and conferences with thousands of people. It’s been pretty exciting musically,
but even more important is the foundation of it.
METRONOME:
I can definitely hear a spiritual edge to your CD. Although, when I saw the
word “jazz” in the album title, I expected something completely different.
Well,
Grace With Jazz On Top... you kind of think of a Sundae with something
sprinkled on top. It’s obviously not a straight ahead jazz CD but the
“Grace”... everything I write comes from a place of faith, even if I’m not
writing something that is overtly Christian. There is hope, there is something
better. Everything is possible with God. There’s the “grace” right there, and I
need a lot of grace in my life, believe me (laughs). But then, I love to scat,
and that’s where the jazz comes in. Even though I mention all these folk
rockers as my initial influences, later on I really started to get in to Bobby
McFerrin. I love him. I got to do a TV show with him. He did a Master Class
with my acapella group, Faith In Action, a few years ago on WGBH. What a guy.
He’s amazing. But Bobby McFerrin, Manhattan Transfer, New York Voices, Ella
Fitzgerald... that’s all in there too. Throw my folky harmonies and desire to
tell a story through my folk background and toss in the influence of the pop
and the funk from my brothers and then sprinkle it all with some jazz and some
scat and you come up with me. I know I can be a bit of a marketing conundrum.
What I am is art. Often after I perform, I have someone come up with tears in
their eyes and tell me how they were moved by something or how they related to something.
That’s what it’s all about. It’s all about communicating to the audience and I
like to do it with a little bit of fun. If you notice in my songs “Secure In
Heart” or “Get In The Water,” there’s a lot of humor in there. I kinda poke fun
at myself. Actually, speaking of my conversion, that’s what “Get In The Water”
is. It’s my conversion story with a little Dixieland edge. You know what they
say about the preachers daughter? That’s who I was. I was the preacher’s
daughter... wilder than a timberwolf in spring.
METRONOME:
I like the song “Grace.” What is that about?
I
was sitting outside of an elementary school. I was teaching music in Jamaica
Plain and I was just feeling bad about some things that had happened recently.
I had said some things to people that had hurt their feelings and it came back
to me and it really hurt. I was realizing just how much I need grace from the
people around me. I screw up! I need a lot of grace and even when I’m not
felling the grace immediately from people around me, I always have the grace
from Jesus. That’s where that song came from.
METRONOME:
“Coffeehouse Song,” wonderful song. Very upbeat. Tell me about that one.
When
my husband Ralph and I were first hanging out together, it was a time when the
sparks start flying but nobody has really acknowledged it yet. I wrote that
song then before we had actually verbalized our feelings for each other. I
played it for him and I think he was a little freaked out. It’s about the
blooming love of me and my husband. We had a lot of fun recording it too.
METRONOME:
One of the best songs on the album “Always Kiss Goodnight” features a nice
vocal duet with singer David Coate. How did that come about?
David
is a very talented singer, guitar player, producer, a Christian artist. I met
him years ago back when I was in Centerpiece. My drummer was a Christian but I
wasn’t. He introduced me to David and then after I became a Christian he
invited me to sing as a background singer on one of David’s albums. I got to
know him a bit more.
I
wrote “Always Kiss Goodnight” as a wedding song for my brother Gary and his
wife Lisa and sang it at their wedding. It’s my advice to anyone who wants to
make their relationship last. There’s actually a biblical underpinning there
too. Philippians 4:13 says to, “Never let the sun go down on your anger.”
That’s my take on it, always kiss goodnight. It’s almost a theme song for Ralph
and I too. We’ve played it together at many other people’s weddings. That was
something I definitely wanted on the CD. I had always done it as a solo with
backup singers but I had never done it as a duet. But David was the voice I
wanted. I think he did a fabulous job.
METRONOME: The song “Precious” highlights
the best qualities of your voice. What’s that one about?
It took me a really long time
to get pregnant. I always wanted children and Ralph and I just assumed that
would happen as soon as we started trying and it didn’t. It was eight years of
prayers and tears and finally with the second round of In Vitro, I got my
beautiful twins, Hannah and Caleb. While they were still in my tummy, I wrote
“Precious.” It’s a lullaby to them. I sang it to them every night for the first
two years of their life. When we recorded it, I was actually crying during the
take. I felt that the emotion of it was so powerful. I was moved by how
incredible my love for my children was and I hadn’t even met them. Once you see
an ultrasound, that’s it!
METRONOME:
How long did it take you to record the album?
Longer
than we planned. About a year start to finish. We did the basic recordings in
March of 20076 with my brothers and Ralph out at Studio 9B with Brian Silver.
Then we did a lot of the overdubs in our home studio. That took a long time.
METRONOME:
You enlisted an army of different people to help you with these songs. Are
these all Berklee friends? How did you know all these folks?
It’s
a couple of combinations. Most of the singers are friends from church with a
couple of exceptions. Most of the musicians are friends from the music
industry- Berklee or church. Then we hired some people from the Conservatory.
We also hired some people from Berklee.
METRONOME:
Where was the album photography of the mountains shot?
It
was on Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. I love Mt. Washington. It’s a special
place for me. One of the cool things about this album is that so many longings
were fulfilled in creating this CD. Recording with my brothers and my husband,
doing the photo shoot on Mt. Washington, a lot of the songs that I desired to
put out for a long time are on there. I spent so many years trying to get
discovered that when I could finally get a chance to do it, it was definitely a
longing fulfilled and dream come true. My ultimate goal is that the most people
possible will be moved by my music and enjoy what I’m doing.

Night of HOPE Billerica Reviewed
Wed, Mar. 17 2010
Night of HOPEa Great Success!
On Saturday, February 20th,
2010 the Bennett Library was overflowing with spirited music, delicious
feasting on desserts and good conversation, but it wasn’t just a swell party!
Numerous people from the Billerica Community and surrounding towns attended and
generously gave over $600 to support Hope Worldwide programs to help orphans of
Aids in Africa and a vital medical mission for children in Hondurus.
Singer/ Songwriter Julie
Kinscheck hosted the event and also played a vibrant set of original songs
interspersed with tearful stories of “precious” children and her characterist
vocal improvisation (SCAT).Her
band included her husband Ralph Kinscheck on Keys, Johnny Vicaire on Lead
guitar and a host of back up singers! The theme song for the evening was “Hope
For the Children,” a song Ralph and Julie had written several years back
inspired by Hope Worldwide. It is recorded on their The Force CD with the band
PTB released in 2006.
Kinscheck pulled in a
wonderful collection of other artists to share the bill including: Suzanne
Clark, Alan Roscoe, Dana Schmitz, Dwayne Burgess and Rebekah and Will Cox.
Dwayne brought down the house with his sweet soulful version of the classic
“Always and Forever.”
Ken Cole was the MC and used humor to tug at everyone’s heart for the cause. But
the audience really turned to butter after the heart-wrenching presentation by
Walter Kotkowski from Hope Worldwide and the moving sharing by
Jessica McClellen, a nurse who had just returned
from the mission in Hondurus. Their stories of children in horrible conditions,
without shoes, facing disease mostly without doctors or medicine made all
grateful for American availability of top notch healthcare.
The Night of Hope certainly
was a great beginning for what we hope will become an annual Billerica event!

Moving Hearts toward HOPE: Christian Performer Shares Her Grace
Mon, Feb. 15 2010
Moving Hearts Toward Hope:
Christian Performer Shares Her Grace
By Liana Measmer,
Billerica Green, Jan/ Feb 2010 Issue
Julie Kinscheck always loved to
sing and planned to make it big some day. She was going to have all those
things known performers have- fame, fortune and prestige. However, her life
took her down a different road than she expected and instead, she became a soul
transformed who has gone to bring hope to thousands...
Born
Julie Gibbons in Ithaca, New York, Kinscheck came to creative arts naturally
since she was part of a very musical family. Her father sang in local operas
and conducted musicals at Cornell. Her mother wrote poetry. Her brothers played
in a rock and roll band.
"Music
was all around me," said Kinscheck.
At nine, she
began singing her own songs for others. Kinscheck wanted to be discovered so
walking along the street (to gymnastics practice), she would sing at the top of
her lungs, hoping to be heard. One of her earliest influences was her
childhood music teacher, John Bailey, who taught her about improvisation. This
later became a cornerstone of her songwriting and arranging. Known as
"SCAT" [Vocal improvisation] became a talent for Kinscheck and she
later donned the title "Queen of SCAT."...
Kinscheck became a Rotary exchange student after high school and went on
to study in Munich, Germany for a year, traveling to France, Italy and England.
She played her guitar on the streets [And thus supported her trip]...
Upon returning to the US she attended Oberlin College, where she
discovered Jazz musci and formed her own [vocal] band. A band member encouraged
her to attend Berklee in Boston, where she obtained a full [jazz masters]
scholarship and learned the ins and outs of the music business.
"Berklee was just what I needed to learn how to make a living as a
musician," said Kinscheck.
Instead of returning to New York [after graduation] Kinscheck remained
in Boston and worked hard. She sang at weddings and taught voice students
privately. She went on to form a cover band, Centerpiece, and started living
the rock star lifestyle. She performed with her group at restaurants and bars
and ultimately ran herself into the ground. She explained that she became
tenacious, never slept and grew to be very bossy. She thought to make she had
to be someone she wasn't and would strut her stuff seductively on stage because
she thought she had to. She had mistaken this for being a tough, independent
woman. [This also earned her a stalker- but that is another story for another
time!]
"
I was proud of that," shrugged Kinscheck.
What happened next transformed her life and her career forever. She
developed 'nodes', a condition where callouses form on the vocal chords. Ultimately,
she lost her voice and her band fell apart. She found all the friends she
surrounded herself with disappeared. It was at this, her lowest point, where
grace stepped in to save her.
Kinscheck had met Jim Peterson, a classmate in college who was a
Christian. He talked about God and Kinscheck listened but was uninterested.
However, upon seeing her fiancee’ transform under the power of the scriptures,
Kinscheck wanted to know more. She began to study the Bible and wrestle with
her own demons.
“Reading
scripture brings a mirror up to your face,”she said.
Kinscheck made the
decision to become a Christian and miraculously her voice healed. She went from
playing little venues and bars to performing in concert halls in front of
thousands at Christian conferences. She realized the possibilities were
endless.
Kinscheck had met
her future husband, Ralph, through school but they never became friends. Eight
years after leaving Berklee, through Peterson, they met again in church, new
people.
“God had changed
us both so much we were ready to fall in love,” she said.
The couple was
married and began making music together.Ralph played keyboards, but was also a talented songwriter, engineer and
producer. He has been an important factor in helping Kinscheck produce her thre
CD’s. IN 2006, Kinscheckproduced
“Faith in Action Live”[a
‘cappella/ gospel /Jazz] with her a ‘cappella group [Faith in Action]. The same
year, she and her husband, through working in children’s ministries, put out
“The Force”- Christian rock for kids, aimed especially at [pre-] teens.
In 2008, Kinscheck
produced her solo debut album called “Grace With Jazz On Top.”
In it, she had her
longings fulfilled as she was able to perform a variety of songs spanning all
types of topics. She wrote music which addressed what women today faced in
society. Also on the CD is “Precious,” the song she wrote to her twins, Caleb
and Hannah, who she endured eight years of miscarriage and medical intervention
to finally have.
“I couldn’t believe
how in love I was with them when they were still just a speck on the screen,”
she smiled.
The performing
gene apparently runs strong in this family, because her tow children love to
sing and now at five years old, even wrote their own songs.
It was at this
time that Kinscheck found the organization Hope Worldwide and began to follow
their charity. She had been raised in a family who had been active in social
causes and through Hope’s events, Kinscheck found a calling. Here she was able
to throw her support behind something she believed in and use her talents for
the good of others.Hope Worldwide
in an international Christian charity that has developed housing for lepers in
India, built AIDS clinics in Africa and staffed hospitals in Cambodia. Kinscheck
would perform at benefits for them all over the country to raise awareness and
much needed funds.
As a result,
Kinscheck will be hosting A Night Of HOPE fund raiser at the Bennett Library.
It will be on Saturday, Feb 20th at 7pm with a $10 suggested donation
per person. Snacks will be provided and Julie will be the feature artist.Other local talents will also perform
and the evening will include a presentation about the work HOPE is doing for
children, orphans and the needy around the world. For more information about
this and her other upcoming performances, visit Kinscheck’s website at www.julieksings.com. For more information

Julie Kinscheck "Grace With Jazz on Top" Wednesday, 13 January 2010
BEDFORD, MA - ANUARY 12, 2010 "Grace With Jazz on Top," the latest CD by singer-songwriter Julie Kinscheck, also known as the Queen of SCAT, is getting rave reviews from print, radio and live audiences all over. Check it out- you may just smile (or cry)!
"Julie Kinscheck's songwriting and outstanding vocal work will satisfy you to your soul..." - Metronome Magazine Jan 2010
REVIEWS: Wildy World wrote: "Fans of Christian pop music will dig Julie Kinscheck." "It's quite amazing how you incorporate the Christian themes into the Jazz styled vox performances let alone the brilliant music arrangements as well. Vocal harmonies are so well arranged, and will bring a big smile to many a listeners face, as it did to mine," exclaimed one Taxi reviewer. For more reviews go to www.sonicbids.com/juliekinscheck
RADIO: Playing on over 3000 international radio stations and selling on line at www.julieksings.com, iTunes cdbaby, Amazon.com etc and selling at Julie's live shows across New England and the US and Canada; "Grace With Jazz On Top"- breaking through.
The album sports a unique blend of spiritual pop and folk with a liberal sprinkle of dynamite SCAT singing. But frankly, it's just a great listen.
BIO: Kinscheck, born Julie Alice Gibbons, was a kid who grew up in Ithaca, NY, playing guitar and writing her own songs from her heart; when she missed the boat to child stardom, she busted her back to make a living singing. She traveled playing the streets of Europe, played countless clubs, coffeehouses, churches and weddings. She was even chosen as one of the best unsigned songwriters by the national academy of songwriters in NYC in 1991.
At last God opened some doors to play larger venues (even Madison Square Garden!) and start putting out recordings. "The Force" with the band PTB and "Faith in Action Live" with a capella group Faith in action, both came out in 2006.
Now a mom of twins with tales of heartaches, struggles and a powerful faith, she has taken her vast experience, songwriting awards and sense of humor and created a work of art in this her debut solo artist CD.
THE MUSIC
"Grace With Jazz On Top" IS VULNERABLE.. While being interviewed by the Billerica Green, the reporter wiped her eyes she was so moved by the story of infertility and God's miracles behind her song "Precious." After 8 long years struggling with infertility, Kinscheck put her amazing love for her unborn twins into song.
The reviewer from Metronome magazine who chose "Grace With Jazz On Top" as a top five pick in January- worthy of the upcoming cover story in March 2010, just called the vocal work on "Precious": "Gorgeous."
"Grace With Jazz On Top" SPEAKS TO WOMEN. One fan who recently purchased the CD commented on how she loved the song "Secure in Heart," - a playful look at the insecurities we all face as women and the only real answer. "Martha, Martha" is another song on the CD that really speaks to women- and how we try to do it ALL! In our craziness, we long to sit at His feet.
"Grace With Jazz on Top" IS FUN! Many deep themes run through Kinscheck's songs, but who said faith can't be FUN! Fans often request the "Coffee Song" at live shows. Wildy World writes: "[It is] a jazz tune that wants to stray into rockabilly. Coffee becomes the metaphor for romance in a wonderful act of innuendo that's family friendly." - and don't forget the signature 'Vocal Trumpet'solo!
Other songs of note on the CD include:
1. The soulful "Grace"- the title cut; resonating the fundamental need we all have for grace from those around us, enhanced with flavorful keyboard work by husband and producer, Ralph Kinscheck and juicy Jaco-esk bass work and smooth drums by Kinscheck's brothers Chris and Gary Gibbons.
2. "American Memory" written in dedication to those who lost loved ones on 911 and other national tragedies. Opening with patriotic drum and flute duet, filled with some folky-funky groove and attitude and finishing with full choir in rich poignant harmony.
3. "Always Kiss Good Night"- Which according to Metronome Magazine "features the outstanding vocal duet with David Coate." One of dozens of custom love songs written by Kinscheck over the years.
4. "A Little Time"- More of a country tune with the interestin twist of being written from the point of view of Time. "I'll be here when you need me, take me! I'm a Little Time!"
5. "Get in the Water"- Dixieland meets SCAT singing and tells the true story of soul saved! Yeah! It is that wild a combo!
GIVING BACK: Kinscheck supports the charity HOPE Worldwide through volunteering and fund-raising. See her live at The Bennett Library, 3 Concord Rd, Billerica, MA Saturday, February 20th, 7pm for the "Night of Hope- Billerica"! - And be ready to be entertained and moved to the core.

"Grace With Jazz On Top" chosen top 5 pick Jan 2010
Thu, Jan. 14 2010
Metronome Magazine Julie Kinscheck GRACE WITH JAZZ ON TOP 10 Song CD
The title of Julie Kinscheck's new CD, GRACE WITH JAZZ ON TOP is a little misleading. There's only a smattering of real jazz offered up with the inclusion of some fine scatting by Kinscheck that shows up on a few songs here and there. Instead, Kinscheck delivers a collection of fine spiritual pop and folk numbers fueled by acoustic guitar, piano, bass and drums. Kinscheck has a beautiful voice and a wide range to match. Accompanied by her husband Ralph on piano and her brothers Chris Gibbons on bass guitar and Gary Gibbons on drums, Kinscheck also employs a handful of players and singers to help her realize her musical dream. Best songs include "Grace", the upbeat "Coffee SOng", the beautiful "Always Kiss Goodnight" that features an outstanding vocal duet with David Coate, and the gorgeous vocal work of Kinscheck in her song "Precious."
Whether you're fan of the folk tradition or a follower of spiritual singers, Julie Kinscheck's songwriting and outstanding vocal work will satisfy you to your soul. [DS]
New Years Resolutions
Sun, Jan. 3 2010
New Years Resolutions
1. OK- Like everyone else in the USA (almost) I want to lose weight. 20lbs actually that I lost and has crept back since I stopped nursing the twins (almost three years ago now!)
2. Get my kids to school on time every day (or at least almost every day! I did so well the first couple weeks of school- then it was all down hill. It is so embarrassing- and it is sin!)
3. This should really be #1... Spend more time in my Bible! I lean way too much on my own understanding. How do I think I can be lead by the spirit when I so rarely quiet my soul enough to listen?
4. Get rid of the CLUTTER! Our goal is to have my lesson studio move into what used to be our garage- but to do that we need to build another small shed for the lawn mower; move the stuff in the garage to the big shed, then re-do the walls and electric and finally- move my studio to the garage... a BIG job. But won't that be awesome when my students can walk straight into the studio and not have to see my messy house?! There will also be a lot more room for groups and rehearsals!
5. Grow as a parent! I need to get my wonderful children in control! And in specific: Figure out how to help Hannah focus. My dear little girl gets so hyper, busy, distracted... it doesn't help that she's fiercely independent and strong willed (that apple don't fall far from the tree etc...) ... I NEED HELP! We're started with cutting back on sugar.
6. Glorify God through the press and gigs I have coming up and the songs I write and the worship I lead- and stop worrying about me getting famous- but instead how my ministry can be most effective! This is more of a goal- but I hope to lay basics for the next CD next fall- so I will need help from God to move the current product to make way.
7. Oh Yeah- and between everything else pick and enroll in a graduate program for vocal pedigogy and conducting!
Celebrate Jesus
Sat, Jan. 2 2010
Because we got snowed out on Dec 20th- our church did their special Christmas program on the 27th instead- and that worked for me, since this way my Mom got to see it! Mom was visiting from Ithaca, NY.
I was very proud of my choir- hopefully I'll get the video to share eventually! The "Hallelujah Chorus" Gospel style rocked! And I was very proud of my voice students who were part of the show- especially Will Cox who sang a contemporary version of "O Holy Night" and sang this sweeeeeet high note at the end- AHHH. Makes a teacher proud!
Because Melanie Singh and Kristen Lamb were out of town I was honored to sing "I Wonder as I Wander" as a solo. People tell me it was beautiful- but I realized I started a bit low and modulated for the third verse- felt a little awkward to me. But I am grateful people were moved.
The biggest laughs came for the three kings dancing joyously to the BNL version of what other "We Three Kings"- and then of course Isaiah. STve Rosenbaum is quite the comic talent!
The wonderful thing about this show, though, was so much more than the singers and actors and cute kids... it was that it was intertwined with the reality we all face at CHristmas-time- the stress and materialism... but gave us a joyful and deep look into the true meaning of Christmas!
Well done all!
Merry Christmas/ Shows and more
Wed, Dec. 23 2009
First of all: Merry Christmas!!!
Christmas Recital Review The Christmas Recital for my voice and guitar students a great success! We performed our show at The Stable in East Chelmsford on Sunday afternoon December 6th to a good sized crowd. Thanks again to Harry for running sound and Kurt for providing the venue (and even helping to clean up at the end!). They have a great open mic over there every third Saturday of the month- go if you can.
Participating were Will and Rebekah Cox... both doing some great versions of some familiar Christmas songs: "O Holy Night" for Will and "Breath of Heaven" for Rebekah- very well plus. We also had Alan Roscoe, Diana Wick and Rebekah singing Selah's version of "Mary Sweet Mary"- which they will be singing again as Elizabeth, Zacheriah and Rachel in our awesome Christmas program at church on December 27th. Diana also did a fun job on an upbeat version of "We Three Kings".
New vocal student Stephanie Jimanez had a great first showing as well as siblings Caden, Ryanne and Arden on guitars.
Speaking of kids- Jason and Sarah Daniel shown as always- doing Christmas material as well as some contemporary Christian songs.- And adult guitar student Linda Metcalf did a fantastic job, too.
A special treat this show was the addition of Allyson Root singing "I Need A Silent Night" with me. She's a talented teen for sure.
Christmas Programs coming Sunday December 27th! We were supposed to do it last weekend- BUT it got SNOWED OUT! BUt God is good and we are trying again! This will be a wonderful show with The hillarious Brooklyn Jew Steve Rosenbaum playing Isaiah leading the audience through the Nativity story in a way you've never seen before... lots of contemporary and traditional Christmas music- and I'll be conducting the "Hallelujah Chorus"- Soulful Celebration style. I will also be singing "I Wonder as I Wander" as part of the communion section. The show is at 10:30 am. Don't miss it!
But for now- lots of cleaning to do before my family arrives- and presents to wrap for the twins! And the baking- yum! Diet starts January First! Have to get skinny before the CD release party at the Bull Run in May or June!
Happy New Year!
Love Julie
Cover Story in Metronome coming! Plus!
Fri, Dec. 11 2009
Wow! I can't believe I haven't written a blog here since October! But I have some GREAT NEWS!
I just got asked to be the cover story for the March issue of Boston's Metronome Magazine!
This comes after The Billerica Green had expressed interest in doing an article on me in January, too!
But here is how it happened. Brian from the Metronome emailed me that Grace With Jazz On Top was chosen as a Top 5 pick for their January issue! That is exciting by itself! (Especially after some of the dubious critiques I've been getting lately form Taxi)
So make sure you pick up the January issue of Metronome and check out the review first of all. You can also check them out on line- when the time comes, I'll get you the link.
But I've been seeing a new how VERY SUBJECTIVE the music business is! I liked what Derek Sivers of CDBaby wrote in recent article entitled "Let the Pedestrians choose the Walkway", he explained how when a college was trying to decide where to put the walkways across the green someone came up with the idea to let the students walk where they would and after the first year see how the grass was worn and put the walkways there. I am seeing that, too with my music. Many people want to categorize me- and they come up confused and then label me unmarketable... and for sure it is more challenging. But I am seeing that there is a sizable audience out there that really likes my music- I just have to find them and let them define me. Let them determine my next steps.
I live on this roller coaster of highs and lows as I travel to this show or conference and that- at some I sell tons at others I sell almost nothing and wonder what happened... Why was this one so awesome and that one so miserable? Praise God for the good ones or I would sink into Satin's trap and think I was terrible and self-deceived that even belong in the music business!
Where does it all leave me? I love writing songs and singing and performing! I love praising God in song- I love to SCAT and I love a heart wrenching folk or country story song. I love applause, laughter and sales- but most of all- I love creating and then feeling that marvelous connection when others are moved by that which poured form my very soul.
And even if I hate dead rooms, critiques, losing gigs, being turned down by professionals, I hate when I screw up and am humbled on stage and when my friends don't come and support me...
I love what I do- and I will just do it until I can't any more... And work it into my life and a wife and Mom... And maybe just maybe, God will do something big with me some day after all! This Metronome opportunity is a nice start to some buzz!- Spread the word!
Oh- And Merry Christmas!
Tribute to Uncle Dave/ A & E Conference
Mon, Oct. 12 2009
On September 18th I flew to Atlanta, GA to showcase at and take part in the Arts & Entertainment conference being headed up by SPEECH, formerly of Arrested Development and now solo artist gone evangelist. I was excited! I was ready to learn and sing and sell CD's. I was sure God had lots to show me- I was right; but it was nothing like I'd expected.
The conference was inspiring; the speakers insightful- but I was riding an emotional roller-coaster... let me tell you why.
Right after watching a a tremendous opening production by the Greater Atlanta Church of Christ and hearing an hilarious and yet powerful sermon by Steve Johnson, I was getting ready to go on stage in the Jazz Room, when I noticed several messages from both of my parents on my iPhone. Now my folks have been divorced for 25 years or more so it could be no coincidence they were both trying to reach me that night- something was wrong!
I listened to my messages to find that my dear uncle Dave had taken a bad fall and they weren't sure if he would make it through the night!
I broke down in shocked tears and staggered to a chair. A wonderful sister I'd never met came to comfort me. I was not alone. I called Mom back to get more details and cried some more. Then I went up on stage. I was asked if I wanted to cancel- I said "no"- I had come to sing and sing I would.
I sang "The Coffee Song"- awfully peppy given what I had just learned! There were not too many people there. Then I told those in attendance of the news and asked them to pray with me. I prayed over the microphone for God to give him miraculous healing. Then sang "American Memory". The line "None of us is promised tomorrow" took on a new meaning just then- it was no longer about 911- it was really about each of us day by day. Dave might not have tomorrow. At least I believe he would be with Jesus if his time came to soon. Not everyone will be- and that is scary.
I didn't sell any CD's that night and not many that weekend. Was it me? Or did the sad news spread and leave a dark cloud around my table? It made me more depressed.
Things didn't get better when in between classes the next day I fielded phone calls from family about his condition- and finally, "We are pulling the life support" and Dave passed- the funeral will be Friday in New Jersey. Tough week end! But God was with me. So many warm shoulders were there to cry on from "family" in Christ that were strangers only hours before.
God even punctuated my mood with torrential rains... which I walked through to see the Martin Luther King Center... FYI- never walk there- really seedy part of town! That is another story... God rescued me there, too!
All of that said, I wasn't in the mood for the endless parties going on in Atlanta that weekend... but I got to thinking about Dave Gibbons. He was my uncle- my father, Paul's big brother. He was at many many family gatherings as a child and into my adulthood. I loved his wife Betty and four kids: Laura, Ken, Phil and Alan.
I remember him as funny and very athletic and devoted to God and his family. I was always impressed and inspired by his Christmas letters detailing his amazing work with Habitat for Humanities and the support he lent Betty as a pastor. He was a minister, too- now she was one as well. They were always quoting scripture and helping youth and loving the poor.
I didn't know his passing would hit me so hard. Death can surprise you like that. But the gathering the following week in New Jersey was precious! Family from across the country gathered to share about his impact on them and give their love. I sang "Amazing Grace (My chains are gone)" at the memorial service. I had a rush of tears when I returned to my seat. I was so moved as each of his four children shared about his impact as a father. Wow.
After the memorial I had to rush off to play a show in Southington, CT at Jitters with Johnny V... Life goes on... God willing. I guess we just "Have to make the best of today- Love like we may not ever get another chance- fill our lives with laughter and don't forget to dance- 'cause none of us is promised tomorrow- say sorry very quickly, and give to those in need- 'cause we can't take it with us, when we go to meet our God..." - From "American Memory" off Grace With Jazz On Top
Dear God, Help me to live each day like it could be my last, savering what and who is most important and not missing a thing! Thank you for the life my Uncle Dave lived. Let me honor him and you by not forgetting to share about you, the God he lived to serve to those in my path. I pray my children would remember me with such love and devotion when my time comes. In Jesus' name I pray, Amen.
NIght of Hope
Mon, Sep. 14 2009
September is CRAZY for me! Every Weekend I am playing in in a different
state from the one before! Could make me "hopeful" that things are
really looking up for this passionate little lady!
The Worship conference in Providence was AMAZING! And the response was great to our showcase!
The Chicago show was very well received.
I can't wait for next week in Atlanta and then our return to Jitters in Southington.
But amidst the exciting shows, the radio play and the travels and
traffic, my heart was moved and tears welled from my eyes at the Night
of Hope in New Britain, CT last Sat. Sept 12th. I am ashamed that
originally I was only doing the show to further promote my CD- and of
course I hoped I'd move some hearts with my music along the way- I
wasn't expecting how my spirit would be fed and inspired.
The night began with delicious African Jerk Chicken- a good way to
start! Then the artists performing before us were excellent: The N
Result really grooved! And this fella, Raphael sang a song about how
beautiful women are to God that made me cry...
When Johnny and I went up to play, I was ready for a good time. WOW
What an audience! They clapped and sang along, in all the right places;
they really listened when I talked about how 911 effected me as my
intro to "American Memory"- and even cried when I sang about my unborn
children in "Precious"! I got standing ovations after many of the
songs! Talk about thrilling!
That would have been enough! I could have gone home satisfied... but God wasn't through with me yet.
Dr. Mark Ottenweiller, the physician who spent 16 years with his family
working with aides victims in Africa through HOPE Worldwide, gave a
presentation about the current work he's doing in Africa through HOPE.
He showed us pictures of some of the 20million Aides Orphans, pictures
of children at their parents' graves! He showed video of women dancing
with joy that they were given the privilege to help save the dying. His
speech was so compassionate- you could tell he really deeply loved
these people and that he was a walking example of God to them. Wow! I
was so happy I came to support this benefit. The miles were worth it,
the hastle- even if the crowd hadn't been so wonderful- though they
were among the best ever.
Thanks to God that HOPE Worldwide is doing such amazing meaningful
work. Praise God that men like Dr. Mark can teach us all how to love
more deeply and give us a way to help- and all the glory to our Lord
that I, little once was wild pagan, Julie, can lend my talents to help
support these efforts!
I have hope that what I do matters- and that is of great worth indeed!
Last Friday night, August 8th, I had the honor to play at the Sweden Town Variety Show.
I missed playing with Johnny V, who has joined me on most gigs lately- but it was still a great night!
This was extra special because I have been vacationing in Sweden, ME (for at least a little time) every year since I was born.
At the show were all kinds of people from my past, Dalzels, Richards, Olsons, Lymans, Johnsons, Hommesses and more! (I'm sure I spelled many of those names wrong!) but I really enjoyed seeing everyone!
Several of my childhood pals were also performing, some of them their children performed, too! Solveig and her husband Mark did some breathtaking dancing and their lovey daughter played the flute (pictured in group shot on my home page). Solveig's Mom, Ruth, was the organizer and Richard Lyman was the MC. (Also in picture)Fred D and Dan Harris and others were in some skits, too. Though I wasn't too happy about how Dan portrayed Sarah Palin- the night was still marvelous!
There was also a bluegrass trio that truly inspired me. They sang this song about names on the wall (WWII) that was very powerful.
My performance came of well- AND my twins behaved in the audience (a major blessing!) There was spontaneous applause after my solo section in the "Coffee Song", everyone clapped and sang along with "Get in the Water"- and several people came up to me to comment on how they enjoyed "American Memory!" And finally, the proof came when I sold a bunch of CD's.
Thanks to everyone who made that evening special.
Musings of a Musician-Mom
Sun, Jul. 19 2009
All my life I've had three dreams: #1- To find my "Knight in Shining Armor"- Like every little girl (and woman) I wanted to find that man who would love me forever! Well, I found him in Ralph Kinscheck (a long and crazy story for another time- but it would make a good movie!) - And he looked like a prince when we married at Hammond Castle in Gloucester- CHECK.
#2- To not only be famous, but do something important with my musical gifts... I'm still working on that! But God has certainly blessed me richly if not always how I had it planned!
#3- To have and raise children of my own- through long struggles, prayers and tears I now have my "Precious" (title of song I wrote for them on Grace With Jazz On Top CD) Caleb and Hannah-CHECK.
But isn't it crazy? Once you think the dream has come true, the work and adventure has only just begun! Marriage is certainly like that! (I highly recommend the "Fireproof Your Marriage" series to help in that!). The career is an endless adventure- full of tangles and insecurities and little victories.
But raising kids can really be NUTS! My adorable, smart, creative, loveable twins got themselves kicked out of Whole Foods Market this week! A wake up call for Mom! If the kid won't stop climbing up the meat counter it doesn't matter how many hit singles I have- the kid is OUT!
But it's hard to juggle lessons, gigs, housework and summercamp and all I was angry at the twins, at the store and mostly at myself! If you can relate, let me know!
But the next day I went to pick up my kids at Vacation Bible school to find them surrounded by their teenage counselor "Fans"- all laughing at their silly jokes and wanting hugs and kisses! They were little celebrities!
I just have to give it to God over and over again!
Chesham Church REview
Sat, Jul. 18 2009
ON July 15th, Johnny V and I got to do a special show at the Chesham/ Harrisville Church in Chesham, NH. It was super special because it was arranged by my father, Paul Gibbons.
Now you have to know that my Dad has a GORGEOUS Baritone voice. I grew up hearing him practicing singing and playing piano in the room below my bedroom. It is such a pleasant memory!
As a surprise I wrote a song for him called "Daddy's Girl"- in fact the first verse is about him and I, the second is about Ralph and our daughter Hannah as a baby and the third is about me and my Daddy God. Johnny just heard it that night but played it great- he has great ears- and thinks it may be a hit! But the main mission was accomplished- my Dad was touched and proud!
The rest of the gig went well. there was a nice little crowd there who seemed to enjoy our two hour sets very much - a bunch of CD's were sold, too.
It is encouraging that my music is appealing to all ages! This group was most gray haired, and some parents have told me that their pre-schoolers adore my music! Go figure!
Thanks again for Russ for suggesting the show and Dad for making it a reality!
It's Hard out there!
Fri, Jun. 26 2009
Yes! It's hard out there! Or should I say "here?" Yup- I'm a struggling artist.
If you know me and my music- I am NOT "Main Stream"- I'm kind of upstream, down stream and all around stream- I've got some jazz from the waterfalls and country grass from the shallows...
I believe in my music, my mission, my passion- but I'm not making a living too well- would you like to buy a CD? Or at least a single mp3 download? How about a ringtone?
The truth is- it is hard for a lot of folks right now- not just me. I can think it's all about me; why don't people like me? Hire me, call me? But in the end- it's about us- WE are engaged in a recession- yeah, yeah! But even more accurately- we're all dealing with life. And the only peace there is- real peace- is in Him- yes, I am talking about God. But even I, a Christian artist, have trouble finding that place of contentment.
So when you are feeling hopeless, pray. Feeling unloved? Pray. Unsuccessful? Pray! At least He listens even if very few people are willing and able to shell out the bucks for your CD! It may or may not result in a lottery windfall of cash, but His comfort is beyond all understanding.
Review All Asia
Fri, Jun. 19 2009
Thanks to all who joined us at All Asia in Cambridge, MA last Sunday afternoon- especially after all the schedule changes! There were several other groups performing with us. I really enjoyed Ryan who started things off- he was a solo guitar/ vocals- al la Dave Matthews without the band. I wish I got his website info- if you read this, Ryan, please contact me and I'll add a link for you!
Johnny V (Lead guitar), Ogechi Ibe (Back up vocals) and I did the show- a quick 1/2 hour at a Cambridge bar... Audience was enthusiastic- that was fun. We weren't sure what to expect... When I got to the "Jesus was waiting" part in "Get in the Water" it did cross my mind that I was being quite bold for Jesus at that moment- Lord, I do hope you were pleased! I was only a tad nervous that we would lose potential fans at that moment- because why were we there anyway? We were there to spread some light intot he secular club scene! In the end I was very pleased! We sold some CD's, added to the mailing list and tightened up our set a bit, too!
Special thanks to Ralph, Dick, Larry and Ann and Ogechi's friends! Enjoy the CD's! -And the ringtones!!!
Body & Soul
Sun, May. 31 2009
Yesterday was an incredible day!
I had the honor of singing a song I wrote called "Peace For My Soul" (Sure to be on the next CD!) at a Womens Day Event called "Body and Soul". It was a refreshing and informative day- full of classes by inspiring women speakers on topics like living a healthy lifestyle, de-stressing your life and dealing with depression. I went to the de-stressing class.
One of the most convicting thing the speaker said, in the context of letting God be in control -not me (a good place to start) was that when I speed on the high way to make up for being late somewhere I am taking control myself and telling God He can't handle it- how do you ask? Well, when I am late- if I speed to make up for it- first of all I am not driving as safely and I am breaking the law, Second I am not learning from my errors and finally I don't give God the chance to teach patience, grace and resourcefulness to those waiting for me.
Wow! The irony of it all was that today I accidentally was speeding coming out of a mall and got stopping by a policeman. I told him tomorrow was my birthday and that I was sorry and he ended up giving me a warning... saying- "you probably have better things do with your money on your birthday than to give $150 to the state!" I thanked him and breathed out. I need God- I thanked Him next as I SLOWLY got back on the road!
But back to the women's day- I sang with Ogechi Ibe, Diana Wick, Jessica Lewis and Rebekah Mey. I was so thrilled with the blend we all got. It really was beautiful! And I guess many were truly moved by it- Praise the Lord.
Student Recital
Mon, May. 18 2009
Yesterday, May 17th, was the Spring Recital for my Voice and Guitar Studio at the Old Bennett Library in Billerica. I was very proud of all of the students who performed. They included: Will Cox and his fiance Rebekah Mey, Ogechi Ibe, Linda Metcalf, Meg Bond (recital debut), Sarah and Jason Daniel and guest guitarist Nate Carter. We missed talented young singer Kelly Duffy who had another commitment this time.
Highlights of the show included: Rebekah and Will giving us a sneak preview of their soon to be wedding "first Song" "From This Moment" which gave many chills! Ogechi shared a beautiful song entitled "I Wish", Sarah and Jason performed together "You are My All in All", Meg performed with her son, Chase "Country Roads", and Linda led us in Pure Prarie League's "Amie"! (The last song even got me to practice my tail off to learn the solo!)
OK- there were some great bloopers, too- restart, forgotten words, complete train wrecks... but that's half the adventure in learning isn't it?
Several previous and soon to be students were all there to cheer us on. Thanks to all who attended!
Cat's Meow
Sat, May. 16 2009
The BIllerica Cat Care Coalition, BCCC once again staged a fantastic Chocolate Tasting event On May 15th! -And I got to play jazz all night for the 5th year in a row! Ralph was on keyboards as we took the stage as Moon Glow- what fun. Sharon Dubois, founder and director of the BCCC, managed to pull together 13 chocolatiers and an impressive collection of silent auction items- this year there was even a "Music Lovers Basket" of Julie Kinscheck Cd's and T-Shirt.
Thanks to all for caring for the kitties!
Julie K on Hollywood New England!
Fri, Mar. 6 2009
On Saturday, Feb 28th, thanks to my good friend and TV Announcer Gail Scott Key, I was interviewed on the TV program: Hollywood New England! The show was hosted by Rita Barry-Corke (Academy Award winning producer for Oprah and Rosie O Shows!) and John Campanello (Between Gigs Casting)- I was humbled by their kind words about my music and homework done on my life! This is also the show through which I have been submitted for an inside audition for America's Got Talent. I am very grateful for their support for me as an artist. This show will be edited and distributed to cable access stations around NE in the next few weeks-
The show should air on cable access stations across NH and MA in late March or early April.
I wish I could tell you when it will air. I'll keep you posted!
Wildy World Review of Grace With Jazz On Top
Fri, Mar. 6 2009
I submitted all three of the CD's I had a key role in producing: Grace With Jazz On Top (Solo Debut), The Force (With PTB- Christian rock for kids) and Faith in Action Live to Wildy World for review- here are the links for all three reviews:
But I have also copied the Grace review below- I think he liked it!
Wildy World Review For Grace
Julie Kinscheck – Grace With Jazz On Top 2008, Kip Media
Boston’s own Julie Kinscheck had dedicated her life to changing the world through music. Whether performing on her own, with a Cappella group Faith In Action or PTB, Kinscheck sings about her Faith and belief in God. In 2008 Kinscheck finally took a huge leap of faith and released her debut solo album, Grace With Jazz On Top. Mixing jazz with folk and pop styles, Kinscheck has created a refreshing and vibrant album.
Grace With Jazz On Top opens with Secure Heart, a great little tune that walks the pathway between 1960’s Rock and Country. Secure Heart has the pop sensibility to catch on with listeners. Grace is written in a Rock/Jazz hybrid periodically reminiscent of The Dave Matthews Band. Coffee Song is the highlight of the album; a jazz tune that wants to stray into rockabilly. Coffee becomes the metaphor for romance in a wonderful act of innuendo that’s family friendly. Get In The Water takes us to Dixieland in a pop arrangement. Kinscheck even gets in some mean scat singing in one of the peppier offerings on the album. Other highlights include The Andrews Sisters inspired He Called, Precious, and the martial country tribute to the resilience of Faith: American Memory.
Grace With Jazz On Top is a memorable collection of pop/jazz hybrids full of Spirit. Fans of Christian Pop music will dig Julie Kinscheck.
Rating: 3.5 Stars (Out of 5)

NIght of Praise -Worship to Feed the Soul!
Sun, Mar. 1 2009
The "Night of Praise" - Worship to Feed the Soul!
On Friday night, February 20th, the Southern region Praise and worship ministry hosted a "Night Of Praise" at the Milton High School led by worship leader Carl Alleyne. Originally billed as a worship night for just the Southern Regions, this refreshing evening was later expanded to include the all church singles and others who wished to participate- and what a blessing it was to those who were there! Many elements of this evening were reminiscent of the Worship conferences in Chicago and DC now spreading to Boston. It might even have been a sneak peak into what we may all share in at the combined NECC and Worship conference in RI this August!
Carl Alleyne organized the music with the support of Carol McGuirk. Contemporary and familiar a' cappella songs were led and performed by many people including special songs led by The South Central Choir and Carl Alleyne; a moving family performance by Corinne, Jacob and Amy Perreault, "My Savior, My God" led by our own Will Cox and "Grace" by Julie Kinscheck much of it backed up by a fantastic band. Carol McGuirk taught the audience the theme song from last year's NECC: "As For Me and My House" as well. Prayers were shared by inspired men and women in several languages including Haitian.
In addition to the praise and worship elements themselves, there was also teaching about praise and worship shared by Terry Folker and Carl Allyene followed by a moving video on the power of worship in our lives. The evening was crowned with a praise dance team dancing to "Glorious" and then leading the audience to dance for the Lord! Following the service was a singles mixer with lots of good food while the band jammed for another 40 minutes full of joy! It seemed all were rejuvenated and exhilarated by their personal praise experience.
One of the goals Carl had stated before the "Night of Praise" was to give disciples a chance to feel free in their worship and to let the beauty and uniqueness of various forms of Christian worship bless us all. That goal was certainly met and surpassed! Many a soul was fed and refreshed and God was definitely praised!

New Years Resolutions
Wed, Jan. 7 2009
Ok! It's 2009 and we are all faced with the task of making new resolutions...
Yes, I want to drop some pound like 2/3 of Americans. But on a much deeper level, I want to do something significant with my music:
1. I want to produce a pro-life video to my song "Precious" that will move people to choose life.
2. I want to write great new songs that can be sung at large conferences and touch people for God.
3. I want to cheer people up, give them hope and make them smile with a song.
4. I want to inspire kids to sing and play and make good choices in life.
5. And along the way I'd like to sell enough CD's to not have t return to a full time teaching job any time soon.
How about you?
Christmas Recital A Success!
Wed, Dec. 17 2008
Hi All!
We had our Christmas Recital and the students did a fantastic job! You should have seen Little Sarah Daniel (age 6) singing her heart out on "Hark the Herald Angels Sing" with her brother Jason on guitar- wonderful! And then there was my four year old wins Hannah and Caleb singing "Jingle Bells"- I thought Caleb was going to break dance at one point!
Kelly, Rebekah, Diana, Will all sang lovely renditions of old favorites like "Let it Snow" (with a SCAT solo- Kelly! What a talent!) or the Christmas song (by our own Blue Eyes: Will Cox) or Contemporary new Christmas songs like "Christmas Makes Me Cry"- (sung by Will and I- My favorite new Christmas Song) or a new Twist on an old standard: "Mary Sweet Mary" done Seleh style by Diana Wick.
Our only divergence from Christmas music was Jonathan who absolutely "Cut a Rug" with the Beatles' "Blackbird"- BRAVO!
My newest addition to the studio who played with us was Linda, an adult guitar student with a wonderful presence and a lot of potential. She made her guitar performing debut! Congratulations!
This time I rented the lovely Bennett Public Library. It was really great- we will certainly do it there again!
Thanks to everyone for their hard work and good cheer!
I hope to post some video footage eventually:)
Standing O at Lowell Auditorium!
Tue, Dec. 16 2008
Last Sunday I had the honor of both conducting and singing at a large (2000plus people) Christmas service at the Lowell Memorial Auditorium in Lowell, MA. It was a super encouraging day - but I was not sure how it would turn out- To God be the glory!
I had a wicked sore throat the days leading up to it for one. And the youth choir I was leading wasn't sounding to tight and then the administration staff decided to cut their rockin' "It's Called Christmas" song by Go Fish and I aws expecting attitudes!
But what did happen was marvelous. The kids had a great attitude and gave with all their hearts. They even got a Standing O at the end of "Mary's Boy Child"! I was so proud of them!
Then I miraculously sang well on "Mary Di You Know" which was just me and my guitar all exposed. Yay!
Of course the most vocally challenging work of the day was on "For Unto Us A Child Is Born" from Handel's Messiah. But we sailed through that as well.
Thank you God.
The only real travesty of the day was that I wanted to bring extra CD stock to be sold at the book table out front and I forgot. A missed opportunity for sure. But God made it a very encouraging event all around!
Grave Robbers Success
Tue, Dec. 9 2008
Well we didn't rob any graves- but Johnny V and I did have a fantastic time playing at the Grave Robbers Coffee House at the Congregational church in Loudon, NH!
Pastor Dave and his wife Shawn took great care of us and made us feel at home. There were a bunch a appreciative folks there to listen to our mix of original and cover gospel, folk, jazz and country- with a few Christmas Songs thrown in.
We had a great conversation with Vicky and her husband Mark who also bought my Grace CD- thanks...
We expect to play there again in the new year!
Show for the Veterans
Sat, Nov. 15 2008
Johny Vicaire shared his marvelous guitar talents as we played at the Shelter for Homeless Veterans earlier this week in Worcester.
Barry Makuch had seen us at a church service and invited us to come play! Big Thanks to Barry for reaching out and sharing his love for that community.
Though the audience was small, those in attendance seemed to be very encouraged. I saw it as a time to really thank the brave men who had risked their lives to serve us.
If you are reading this make it point to say "Thank you " to some service person you see in the next week. It means so much.
Honoring our troops.
Thu, Oct. 23 2008
A couple of weeks ago, Ralph and I and out friend Jerry Maday o bass played at a church service in Worcester, MA. After the service I was approached by Barry, a veteran with a big heart for other veterans.
He had been moved by our performance and asked if I would be willing to play at the shelter for homeless veterans in Worcester. I said I would love to.
After tossing some dates around we settled on November 12th- the day after Veteran's Day. This felt perfect!
It's crazy- I grew up not appreciating our military; I thought anyone who carried a gun was evil, I went to anti- Vietnam rallies and the like. It took my 911 to make me stop and realize how grateful I am for the protection, service and sacrifice of our US military.
I now have numerous friends in the military and give various kinds of donations to military related causes- but this is not to toot my own horn... it is to hold them up- those heroes willing to give it all for me, for us!
My song "American Memory" is dedicated to them and those local heroes, cops and firefighters, too.
Thank you so much for all you do! God bless you!
"Get in the Water" on Youtube!
Thu, Oct. 23 2008
Finally! I have a video on the web! Thanks to Doug at NERCH, a live version of my song "Get in the Water" is up on Youtube!
If you would like to send it to your friends you can use this link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQr4TURXDi8
I plan to have many other songs form that show up on the web eventually- I have had some technical difficulties!
Harvest Walk for Hope Worldwide
Wed, Oct. 8 2008
At a time when we are all feeling the crunch of our economy, I like to stop and realize how incredibly blessed I am compared to most of the world and much of our own country!
On October 19th, my husband Ralph, my kids and I will be walking in the Harvest Walk for Hope Worldwide. It will take place at Franklin Park in Boston at 12noon.
I have been volunteering for HOPE Worldwide for over 15 years! It is such an amazing charity! They have been awards many accolades for their work with Aides victims in Africa, building housing for Leppers in India and constructing and staffing a free hospital in Cambodia!
They also have done wonderful work with orphans around the world; setting up new group homes for older or homeless orphans in Romania and India, serving in existing orphanages- even running a HUGE olympic game event for hundreds of orphans in Russia. Finally they run an adoption agency where through which several of my friends have adopted children- on of those orphans is now a beautiful teenager and one of my favorite babysitters for my twins!
Locally, they sponsor many projects, working together with the Red Cross, DSS and Habitat for humanity among others to meet specific regional needs... including sending their Hope youth Corps to do major disaster relief and rebuilding in New Orleans.
OK- so you know I love them! I have even pledged to donate a portion of the profits from "Grace With Jazz On Top" to HOPE Worldwide- as soon as I break even... so PLEASE help me help others by sponsoring me on my up coming Harvest Walk. You can donate securely on line at my First Giving page: First Giving page, or you can send me a check: written to Hope World Wide at Julie Kinscheck, PO BOX 224, Bedford, MA 01730.
Thank you for practicing True Religion!

Cover is $10 for adults- BUT: Print out and present that email message at the gate on September 6th, get TWO admissions FOR THE PRICE OF ONE!
My kids are watching the classic Rudolf the Red Nosed Reindeer video right now- I know- it is August- and HOT- but maybe they are just dreaming of snow.
Anyway- as everyone is teasing Rudolf- we all remember (and love) how he eventually took his "Difference" and it became his strength.
In fact- isn't that what America is famous for? The underdog, the unlikely, the one with the crazy innovative idea or seemingly unsurmountable handicap who breaks through and does something great?! We love those stories don't we?
Would you say Rudolf wanting to lead Santa's sleigh with a red nose was a bit "Out of the box?" He certainly didn't "fit in".
And how about in the scriptures? Gideon was the smallest in his clan, David was the youngest of 7 brothers, Joseph was sold into slavery... but all of them accomplished great things- because God took their weaknesses and made them strengths. He took the unlikely and made them great.
And then there was Jesus- born in a manger, executed on a cross who then accomplished the most incredible task in history.
OK- so I have no guarantee that God will use me in such a way... (And I have no aspirations to die a horrible death certainly!)... but should it be such a discouragement that I am considered "Outside the Box?"
I resolve to not be disheartened. I take hold of the American dream- no better- I trust in God's plan to take what I have to offer and put it to His best and most significant use.
SO I hope you will come along with me on this wild ride. Because it is sure not to be conventional or predictable. There will be bumps and twists and probably switchbacks-
But I surrender the fact that I am "Unique" that I am "Outside of the box" and celebrate that fact- I just need to find those of you who relate to my heart and enjoy my music and want to share this journey with me- to where ever it leads!
God may have some great things in store for each of us along the way! - Besides- where would we all be without Rudolf!
Lessons learned At GMA Music in the Rockies
Sun, Aug. 17 2008
Lessons Learned at GMA- Music in the Rockies
The biggest thing I took home from this amazing week at 8010 ft up in the air, surrounded by the GORGEOUS Rocky Mountains was that God wants me to listen to Him more closely.
As a Christian I have heard God speak often through the Bible, preachers or others He has put in my life- but how often have I heard Him speak directly to me? Not often enough.
On the 2nd day there John Eldridge (Author of Wild at Heart) gave the sermon in the morning. He focussed on how in John 10 Jesus says that the sheep know his voice and listen to him, follow him.... How we should hear him, too. I am working on a song about that!
He recounted a funny and yet moving story of how he wanted to go on vacation to this dude ranch with his family. When he prayed about it he heard God say "No". He refused to hear and asked again- "No" - a third time "No"- finally he asked his wife to pray and she also heard "No". Discouraged and yet trusting and obedient they made other plans for their vacation. That year huge fires ripped through the area where the dude ranch was- completely destroying it- the very week they would have been there! He praised God they had listened.
I decided I needed to listen a lot more.
Some background on me... in the weeks before GMA I was very discouraged. Though I had felt God was very behind our making of the CD- I hadn't felt he had been opening doors for my live playing. I had been playing lots of empty rooms... Not able to secure a place for the CD release concert... even been cancelled from some regular gigs at restaurants because I wasn't bringing in enough business!
This was juxtaposed to the great response I was getting whenever I played for a captive audience at a church or conference... What was God trying to tell me? Was I going after the wrong stuff? How was I supposed to make a living? Were my dreams His dreams? Or was I just bullheadedly following my own plans?
First I put a fleece before God- I asked Him to have 3 people tell me "Don't give up" in the next week. Five did. Ok- so he does want me in music- what next? I fasted off of bread and headed West.
The first day at GMA Music in the Rockies, I competed in the vocal artist competition- the next day I got results for the songwriting competition.. I didn't even make the second round in either competition- I was VERY discouraged and bewildered. (never mind that there were hundreds of very talented vocalists and songwriters all there to be discovered that week, too) What did this mean/
Now add John Eldridge's message to that and spin. The rest of my time in the Rockies ended up being a time of soul searching, asking questions of God, other Christians and artists and music industry professionals and taking it back again to God.
And I had some revelations and break throughs.
The Christian Music Industry spoke load and clear: "We like your music- but you don't fit into our box. Go book yourself- make a name and then maybe we'll listen. Oh- but- you are unique- and really cool. - but Christian radio won't touch you- but you are really unique- and your love for God overflows from you- nice voice- but we won't touch you" Enough to make you crazy!
But the young folks I was jamming with every night after hours spoke another message all together: " We DIG this, Julie! If you have any CD's left at the end of the week- I'll buy one full price! You are a talented musician- and Oh , MY- how DO you do that vocal trumpet thing?!" I plan to pursue the college market with more vigor soon!
An amazing little couple of things happened, though- amidst the confusion and tears.... I heard God speak. No BIG life shattering answers- but just enough to know he was listening.
I was sitting in this class taught by the head of the Christian music publishing wing for EMI Records. I was planning to give him my Grace CD at the end of the class- as I waiting in line to speak with him I heard a voice say "Don't give him the CD"-- What? "Don't give him the CD." - I knew this time it was God- and I only had 3 CD's left- so I obeyed and walked out.
Later that day I was in a different class taught by a marketing rep for Word Records artists. I felt her class was very helpful- but hadn't planned to give her a CD... but there was God again: "Give her a CD"- this time I responded more quickly-"OK- no problem" and I walked up and sheepishly said- "Gee, I don't expect you to give this to anyone or discover me or anything- but woul d you mind taking this and giving me some marketing advice?" Leigh Holt was very gracious and said she definitely would listen and get back to me and we exchanged info. I left that room elated- I had definitely heard God two times that day! It was a start!
About the CD's- I still had two. One was earmarked for Mark Bright who was producer for Rascal Flatts and Carrie Underwood- I really wanted to connect with him at his class the next day- but somehow I missed that class so I had one available to give to Megan- a talented young woman who had been such an encouragement to me that week (if you're reading this- I love you, Megan!) -
But there was still one left. "Always good to have one available on the airplane- you never know who you'll meet.." right? Then I got to take an airport shuttle with Mandisa ( read other blog about my transportation fiacos!) the last day... and of course I gave it to her! So God had it all perfectly arranged!
I will be listening more closely in the future!
Transporation Fiascos- How I met Mandisa

Boston to Estes Park, CO and Back Fiascos
(How I Met Mandisa)
I had to be at Logan airport in Boston at 6 am for an 8 am flight to Denver, CO. I was to connect at JFK in NY and lay over 3 hours before heading for Denver. Then I would take an hour and half shuttle up to Estes PArk, CO- at 8000 ft altitude. I knew it would be a long day…
First sign of trouble: My boarding pass would not print from my home computer.
Second challenge: Good thing I arrived at 6am on a Sunday morning- because I needed every moment! The conveyer belts were broken, the lines were out of control and noone seemed to know which line I was supposed to be in!
Third fun experience: Then I waited at least an extra 45 minutes in wrong line before someone told me that I had to go print out my boarding pass at a kiosk. The Kiosk would not print my boarding pass- so I had to wait in another line. When at last I got my tickets they made me pay an extra$20 for my garment bag.
#4 Problem on day one: Because of the conveyer belt problem, my luggage didn’t get onto the flight – and didn’t arrive till the next day- so I had no clean clothes or toiletries my first day at this important conference. Yay.
Ok- so I’m there at last, with clean clothes…. Big week goes by… I didn’t make the finals of the vocal competition (boohoo)- so I was packed and ready to go home Friday night- in time to take an overnight flight and be home to video a wedding with my husband Ralph ( another side business of ours- Ralph does a nice job editing, too- check out his site www.kip-video.com)
The airport shuttle co screws up my shuttle time so I could not make my 12:55 am flight home. Since I was technically leaving on Sat the 9th (after midnight the 8th) the shuttle Co booked me on a shuttle at 7pm on the 9th! Totally missing my plane! The management was completely unsympathetic- so I tried calling cabs, limos- shux! I even offered the staff at the Estes Park YMCA $150 to any person who would drive me to the airport in time to make that plane!!!!! I could NOT get to the airport! But God had a better plan!
I finally surrendered and changed my flight- accepted the $100 change fee and shed a tear on the phone while apologizing to my husband that I had just left him without a second camera at the last minute!
When I tried to change the flight on line the computer would not allow me to choose a seat and finish my transaction... so I spoke to 2 very nice customer service reps and finally gave me the seat assignment.
Then I called the shuttle co back… They had no available shuttles until- you guessed it- 7pm on Sat evening!!!!
It was nearly 10pm by now- I had totally missed the artist finals show… (Which incidentally my roommate Maggie Erickson won in her division- Congrats Maggie! You GO Girl! Sorry I missed your performance!) I ran to concert hall and ducked back stage with a note pleading for the some kind soul to drive a stranded artist to the airport in the morning- WILL PAY! I got the note of the president of GMA, John Styll- and the sound system had just been turned off- too late- by about 2 minutes!
Despondent, I was about to try calling cab companies again when the president, John, says he’ll hook me up with his artist shuttle folks and see what they might have available.
BINGO! This was where God was leading all along! I ended up getting a free ride to the airport with none other than the marvelously talented Mandisa! Now if you don’t know Mandisa- go right now- DO NOT Cross Go or collect your $200 until you go to iTunes and listen to “Only the World” by Mandisa. She was a fialist on American Idol the season Carrie Underwood won- and her new CD is fantastic! I love it and have now covered two of her songs.
Let me just say I WAS THRILLED!!!!!
Mandisa was very warm and fun to talk with. We shared about our lives and faith – I told her how I love her music and gave her my CD- I wimped out on getting her email- hopefully she comes to my site and reads this… If so- I hope you enjoyed my music, Mandisa!
But the story is not over yet! When I went to print my boarding pass the next day, the Jetblue website had no record of the changed flight and it took another 1/2 hour on the phone to get things straightened out... then at last it printed.
When I got to Denver the crew was not there so our flight was delayed- then there was a mechanical problem and a part need to be replaced! But I ran into 2 great fellas I met at GMA: Frank Marston and Scott Holly and we had some great conversation. In fact, I took out my guitar and played “Get in the Water” for Scott- and a gate security guy came over when I finished- I thought he was going to make me stop- instead he said since I was playing so well- he was going to offer for me to pre-board to make sure I got my guitar in an overhead compartment- very nice in any case- but especially since it was a full flight!
We got off the air about 2 1/2 hours late. I should have missed my connecting flight at JFK.
Jet Blue did one thing right here, though- they did hold the connecting flight at JFK so a large group of us didn't miss our connection to Boston. Wish I could always just walk off gate 20 and onto gate 19 and fly so promptly- that was cool.
After all that I got home to Boston around 9pm- Ralph and twins came and got me around 9:30 ( expecting my plane to be later…somehow we made up some time in the air). Hannah jumped into my arms and clung to me like superglue - and I was VERY HAPPY to be home again with my family.
I will be performing at the NE Culture Fest this September 6th!
This is exciting, too because I am getting a booth. We will do some live performances of songs from "Grace With Jazz on Top", A special show for kids with "Happy Julie" and a vocal master class scheduled through out the day!
Check out their website below! More detail coming as we get closer.

Chicago was "Glorious!"
Mon, Jul. 21 2008
A couple weeks ago I returned from Chicago where I attended the 2008 ICOC Worship Conference entitle: Glorious! And that it was! Wow! What an inspiring and spiritually fulfilling weekend!
I also had a honor of performing a couple songs from my new CD as a showcased new artist! That went very well, and has led to some radio play on a station in the Cerribean called Cross Coutry Radio: CCR104.3 and 88.5 FM!
Also singing with me there were Diana Wick, Maureen Ghoman, Ogechi Ibe, Bryan Pitts, Rick Dargish, Toni Franklin and Jim Cafarella!
Another High light of the conference was performing with the marvelous Praise Team from the entire East Coast led by the Talented Tony Martin of Baltimore, MD.
Finally, I had the honor to teach a class (something I'd like to do more of) entitled: "Glory though Song (Vocal Coaching)" which focussed on both the heart and vocal techinique of the soloist in the worship setting. You can here the complete audio and get hand outs fromt he class on vocal health and more at the following link: Glorious link , Just scrol down to my class title and click.
Aside from selling a bunch of CD's and making great new friends, I feel God moved in our hearts very intensely and it will be moving my ministry and song writing for a long time to come!
Julie had fun last Sunday afternoon playing at the opening for the new Apple Store on Boylston Street in Boston!
Husband , Ralph Kinscheck keyboards, is founder of the Boston Logic Users Group, a networking organization fror those using the Apple recording software: Logic. Through this association Ralph was asked to form a band and play at the new Apple store to demonstrate Apple's live stage performance software!
Ralph saw this as not only a great opportunity to promote his Logic Users Group- but he also an excellent opportunity to promote Julie and her new CD! As a result the band played a couple songs from "Grace With Jazz On Top" in their set to a grand response!
The store manager praised their show and announced her plans to bring this group back for future Apple events!

Julie Plays Vibratos in Bel Air
Wed, Apr. 23 2008
- Julie Sings with fabulous jazz singer Barbara Morrison at Vibrato in Bel Air, Califonia!
Julie's brother Gary Gibbons is a tremendous jazz drummer playing the LA scene. On a recent visit to CA for her 105 year old grandpa Ray's memorial (where she performed a song "The Seed" she had written for that occasion to tears of joy and remembrance by the way!) Julie joined Gary at a gig at the fantastic jazz grill, Vibrato where he was backing up Barbara Morrison, a wonderful jazz vocalist who has toured with Ray Charles, shared the stage with John Hendricks and Cleo Laine and other greats.
To everyone's joy and surprise, Barbara called Julie up to the stage to sit in for a couple numbers (something never done at this swanky joint!). First Julie tore up the place with her rendition of the standard: "All Of Me"- then the big thrill came when Julie and Barbara sang "Summertime" together. They traded verses, SCAT solos and harmonies and brought down the house!
Among those who asked for Julie's card afterwards were the current agent for Gino Vanelli.

"Music is a Window into Singer’s Heart"

Billerica, Mass. -
Billerica, Mass. - Patriotism. Infertility. Forgiveness. Motherhood and marriage. God.
Julie Kinscheck, Queen of Scat, sings about it all because it all has touched her life and her heart.
“Grace with Jazz on Top,” her debut album, is a contemporary Christian CD that, according to Kinscheck, “is not in your face Christian”. The title cut, “Grace” speaks to the need by all people for mercy from friends, spouses and God for our humanness.
“American Memory” starts out with rousing military style drums and flute, which Kinscheck wrote following Sept. 11.
“As a people, we need to cherish every day and the relationships we have today because we are not promised tomorrow,” Kinscheck, a Billerica resident said
Kinscheck’s debut CD will be released in April. On Friday, Feb. 29, she will sing at the Jitters Coffee House in Southington, Conn.
...
In addition to singing and songwriting, Kinscheck holds guitar classes at the Billerica Recreation Center, and has 15 private guitar and voice students. Two of her students, Will Cox and Kelly Duffy, have learned much from her.
“I am much more aware of how I sing,” said Cox. “She’s a very good teacher.”
“I probably would not have had the courage to do it if I hadn’t had her support and training,” said Duffy, who performed “My Funny Valentine” at American Idol Camp.
...
“My parents instilled in me a desire to make a difference and I chose to do it through my music,” said Kinscheck.
...
Then an angel was sent to her from a very unlikely place. Her favorite guitar player, Jim Peterson, a classmate at Berklee, began studying the Bible with her ex-boyfriend. Kinscheck saw a dramatic change and began studying the Bible too. What she discovered astounded her.
“The mirror of the Bible came up to my life and I had to pay attention,” said Kinscheck. “Then it was about me and God.”
“From then on, I decided that I didn’t need or want to do it alone anymore,” said Kinscheck. “That I would glorify God and not just me.”
Shortly after, Julie and her husband Ralph, were married. They had met at Berklee eight years beforehand but became friends when he joined her church, Boston Church of Christ. Ralph is the producer, engineer and main piano player on this CD.
Eight years and a second round of invitro fertilization later, the Kinschecks became proud parents to beautiful twins, Hannah and Caleb. In the song “Precious,” Kinscheck serenades the two tiny lives waiting to be born. She reassures them that “Nothing could become more precious than how you’ve become for me. My life will never be the same now that I hold you in my arms and I call out your names. My precious little babies"

You have a great way of interpreting your songs...how do you get all those words in there? Fast and furious at times! Loved the vocals...did you do all of those? Nice groove too!
